Weekend Music Picks

652334630_m.jpgWe've already told you about The Arm's CD release show on Friday, but we think it deserves another mention: they'll be playing with Single Frame, Faceless Werewolves and Lomita over at Emo's. We've also just found out that Super!Alright! has been tapped to provide visuals, which kinda makes sense considering they've already done a bunch of videos for Single Frame. The Arm's promised to bring some "special guests" onstage throughout their set, as well as a few select covers.

gal-73577.jpgAlso on Friday night is SF Bay Area's perennial electronic jam band Sound Tribe Sector 9. Though we've yet to catch one of their live performances (and the records supposedly don't do them justice), friends vehemently insist that they're one of the craziest acts to see. Otherwise, consider heading east to the Blue Theatre, where the Fuse Box festival continues -- sets by Loxsly and The Lemurs are to follow a performance of Your Negro Tour Guide, which you can find our more about in our theatre coverage.

centromatic_sat.jpgSaturday's a bit more frustrating, as there are at least four great events we'd like to catch: indie rock/folk band Calexico, having just released Garden Ruin, are playing that free show over at Emo's. Keep in mind that it's happening earlier in the evening (6pm) -- show up too late and you just might stumble in to find the Deathray Davies, The M's, or the Good Time Crisis Band playing. Chicago's The M's just released a new LP, Future Women, that's something akin to Britrock-meets-psych. For something considerably more low key, the Parish Room's hosting two wonderful Misra Records bands: Denton's Centromatic and Toronto's Great Lake Swimmers. And, of course, there's the Peel show at Beerland, which we told you about yesterday. Check out some downloads below.

MATT_OLIVER_SOLO_APRIL16_FLYER.jpgClose out your weekend with Matt Oliver, singer from Austin's Sound Team. He's playing a solo set at Beerland ("Just me and the club's piano"), before the band leaves for several months of tours later this month. Expect songs by Kurt Weill, Randy Newman, John Cale, Lou Reed, ESG, Neil Michael Hagerty, and, of course, Oliver himself.

Still not convinced? We've included several more shows happening around Austin in our Weekend IST List.
