Cine Las Americas Screens Next Week
The ninth annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival kicks off next Wednesday, offering a wide assortment of programming from countries in North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. The full film schedule, listed after the jump, includes music documentaries ("Si Sos Brujo," "Mestre Humberto"), classic Cuban Revolution films ("Soy Cuba," "I Am Cuba: The Siberian Mammoth"), first endeavors by Latin American directors ("El Norte: Entre el Infinito y la Nada," "Cama Adentro"), and dramatic shorts ("El Dia De Los Muertos," "The Invitation"). We'll be previewing a selection of films next week, before the festival begins.
This year's festival also includes a special day dedicated to Cine Las Americas' sixth annual youth film competition, Emergencia, which invited aspiring filmmakers under 19 from Austin, San Antonio and New York City to submit their works that were later judged by students at Johnston High School. "Emergencia" admission is free, and also includes a selection of family-oriented international short films.
Just recently, details regarding the Opening Night festivities were announced: they'll be screening Argentinian director Jorge Gaggero's "Cama Adentro" (Live-in Maid), the story of "Beba, a woman from Argentina’s middle class,
and her live-in maid of 30 years, Dora. With the crisis of the Argentine economy, Beba can no longer pay Dora’s wages, and after three decades of living under the same roof, the codes and customs of their relationship begin to change."
You can purchase an all-inclusive badge to the film festival, which runs from April 19-23, for $60, or purchase individual tickets for $5. Screenings will be held at the Regal Metropolitan 14, Congress Ave's Hideout Theatre, and the Millennium Youth Complex.
