Austin Joins the Immigration-Protest Fun
Between 300,000 and 500,000 people marched peacefully through downtown Dallas yesterday in support of, among other things, immigration reform that allows for a path to citizenship. More protests are planned for today in more than 50 cities across the country.
Austin actually has two demonstrations. The biggest of the two will probably be the 4 p.m. march from the capitol building, where everyone is encouraged to come. The march beginning at 11 a.m. at the MLK statue on the UT campus is asking that students stay in class and attend the later rally. (If anyone's heard of any counterprotests, let us know in comments.)
It looks like a recent similar giant rally in L.A. was no fluke, and that the recent student walkouts could be a harbinger of a bigger political mobilization by a traditionally underrepresented population. Whatever you think of the politics — and it appears this particular constituency is particularly pissed about HR 4437 — it promises to make for an even more interesting mid-term this November.
