Happen to be working on the Next Great American Comedy? Want to share it with the public, and pull in a little dough to boot? Our esteemed colleagues at the Austin American Statesman will put their money where your mouth is...or something like that. They're hosting the XL Funnywriter Contest, for which you can win $500 for writing the funniest "600-word scenario or dialogue script — on political, musical or evergreen subjects."

Semi-finalists will have their work performed by the pros at Esther’s Follies on May 12 and 13 at The Hideout and the Velveeta Room. From that round, six lucky finalists will be selected to have their work published in the May 18 edition of the Statesman's Thursday XL magazine. To cap everything off, "the three top finalists will be announced on May 19 at Esther’s Follies. Those sketches will be performed on May 20 at the Velveeta Room."

Go here to enter. Get your stuff in before April 27, 2006. Direct any questions to Michael Barnes himself at mbarnes(@)statesman.com.
