Birds Barbershop Plugs In Its Clippers...And Its Amps

1143743110.jpegCombining the admittedly disparate ideas that Austin is both the Live Music Capital of the World and a burgeoning mecca for fashion and style, two locals are embarking on a bold new venture this summer: they're opening up a brand-new music venue ... that also happens to be a barbershop.

Birds will reside at 2110 South Lamar, just southwest of Oltorf and a few blocks away from the newest Alamo Drafthouse. They liken the salon, which will offer cuts, shampoos, shaves and color services to both men and women, to your "favorite independent record store, but with chromed barber chairs instead of album racks." Next to the haircutting stations will be a full stage setup where bands and DJs can perform. We think it's an intriguing concept, to say the least.

Co-founders Jayson Rapaport and Michael Portman came up with the idea as a sort of middle ground between their shared love for music and desire to get a "decent haircut at a decent price." Birds, they promise, will offer Austinites affordable walk-in services ($15-27 for various cuts) and loud music in a beautiful interior setting, designed by Chronicle-dubbed "Interior Design Guru" Joel Mozersky.

They're also currently looking to hire several stylists and barbers -- if you're interested in applying, email them your resume along with a list of your "top five bands/moments of musical bliss."

This idea for a “rock n’ roll” barbershop sounds a lot like Floyd’s Barbershops of Denver, LA, and Maryland - and soon in TX. I guess imitiation is the most sincere form of flattery!

not to be rude, floyd, but i think the difference may be that these guys intend to play good music, not mainstream radio rock
