Beauty Bar Opens in Austin

beautybar.jpgFollowing in the footsteps of New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego, Austin's getting its very own Beauty Bar. The premise, on paper, sounds somewhat ridiculous: combining two parts full-service watering hole and one part 60's salon kitsch, the chain of hipster havens positions itself as the perfect place where you might enjoy a manicure with your martini. And they have pink wallpaper!

Although they're only debuting to the public today, Beauty Bar Austin -- located on East 7th next door to the equally-new Red 7 indie rock club and across the street from Sidebar -- has already hosted a slew of events in the past two weeks. During SXSWi they threw the official afterparty for the new Pixies documentary, with members of the epic band performing guest DJ sets. We were too, uhh, drunk over at the Pluck/Blogburst party over at Club de Ville to make it over, but we can only imagine that it was a fabulous success.

We did, however, make it out there last Friday, when Jane Magazine held court for their private day party. Had we partaken less liberally of their free Dr. Pepper vodkas, we'd probably have more to report -- but we do remember catching fantastic sets by Film School and Of Montreal. Kevin Barnes in a white wedding dress? Not just the stuff of fantasies.

Tonight, they're offering free Tito's and beer (not mixed together, we're hoping) from 9pm-10:30pm, with sets by DJ Shane and DJ Fuckysuk. Yes, Fuckysuk.

Beauty Bar Austin
Proper Grand Opening
Thursday, March 23rd

Beauty Bar Houston...soon to come :)

Did I? The snarky p.s. was rude, but its hard not to fight snark with snark. I just can't understand why narcissism and the commercial tendencies of particular indivduals anger people when there are so many more important things to get angry about. Seriously, click on one those links. Especially the GMO one- that shit really does make me angry. I didn't want to get technical, but seeing as how I missed my point, I will:

The companies that produce genetically modified seeds for crops engineer them to withstand huge amounts of pesticides- because they're the same companies that make the pesticides!! Even worse, they own the genetic code to the seeds as "intellectual property" and can harass small farmers with lawsuits when the GM strain gets integrated into their crops via pollen drift and other natural occurences. It is really fucked up. The biggest culprit is Monsanto Co., who produce "Roundup Ready" corn and soy- so called because it is genetically engineered to handle large amounts of their weed killer Roundup.

I won't even start on the US policy of "GM or starve" for third world countries....

    Allison,

You did a piss poor job in trying to discredit that guy's point.

You pretty much reiterated his argument about the narcissistic and commercial nature of the individuals that would enjoy a place like the Beauty Bar.

    Dear Ian,

I can see that you're embittered that humans are social creatures. Unfortunately for you, people have enjoyed relaxation and entertainment in familiar social environments for thousands of years. However, instead of wasting your time fretting that the natural tendency of your peers to indulge in pleasures is intrinsically linked to the economy, why don't you dapple in some of these topics instead:

    Human welfare:

    www.unicefusa.org

    Habitat destruction:

    www.nature.org

    Cruel treatment of animals:

    www.peta.org

    Corporate control of GMOs:

    Third World poverty:

    Go get angry now! Kisses,

    Allison

P.S. Sorry if you got made fun of for being fat in high school. Guess you'll never have to spend $230 on size 0 jeans though.

I’m going to the Beauty Bar this weekend to knock all the teeth back into that troll of a “bouncer’s” cock-pipe that was working the back door, err fence, at the …Trail of Dead set during SXSW. I love patronizing an establishment that pushes people around for leaning on a fence in a public alley.

Hipsters are the most commercialized and conforming bunch of folks in America. Should it be surprising that the Beauty Bar’s franchise owners are savvy enough to exploit the Red River area? At the rate central and east Austin is morphing into a fuck-pit of octagon haircut wearing narcissistic gypsy dildos, I’d rather get a train pulled on my sweet ass at a University of Texas fraternity party than be near a place the MTV2 generation frequents.

You might as well park your size 0 Yanuk jeans, Onitsuka Tigers, and clever $87 Factory People t-shirt at another bar franchise like the Fox and Hound. At least at the F-n-H you can stuff your anorexic waif of a body with a blooming onion and pepper shooters with no pretension. And what hipster doesn’t enjoy food that looks like a deep fried anus?

The partial owner of the B-Bar, that tubtard Jason Reece, knows you’re a target audience. His bar will provide that creepy Wal-Mart aesthetic: Something familiar, no matter where you are in America. If it is Hollywood, New York, Las Vegas, or Austin you too can have a manicure and a Miller High Life and enjoy your irony in pre-1970’s style. Even with pink wallpaper.

    Um...and?

  • omit

Um...the Beauty Bar was opened by a Trail of Dead member.

  • kbah

Kunek played there Wednesday (I think) night amd were pretty amazing. They're from Stillwater, OK and I had never heard of them before, but they impressed. There was quite a group of people standing in the alley outside of the fence listening to them (or trying to , over Ghostland Observatory playing next door at SOME blog's party...)

    but yeah...Kunek

  • Declan McManus

Yeah, it's so un-Texas to do this. Texans aren't pretentious enough to want to go somewhere like this!

I mean, the women of Dallas and Houston would never go to a bar to get a pedicure while drinking a $9 martini!

And Austin women? Well, clearly they've been staying the fuck away from Cuba Libre on whatever night it is that they do a manicure/pedicure happy hour.

I'm going to get my nails done now.

  • David

This bar is not Texas enough give me a break. This bar does well in other cities because it does not fall inline with the rest of the bars by playing the same music and having the same vibe. I love going to the beauty bar in Vegas because it is so unvegas as it can be.....so fad bar it is not actually it is quite the opposite!

  • Knackered, yeah?

And Beauty Bar is where Peaches signed my chest. Isn't that Texan enough for you?

  • ayc

    nackered, hah!

  • odam

too bad you were too nackered, AYC, the nada surf set was the hilight of friday! and i do wish one or two people in particular could have gotten in to the overcrowded venue.

  • born in austin

how freaking ridiculous is this? would these idiots who open jackass stuff like this just stay- in or go-to LA and NYC. this stuff is so un-texas it is absurd. i want to vommit now. and make a feauz finish out of ti and sell it to the next fad, idiot bar.
