You Cannot Resist Organic Subconscious Paintings

Since one of Austinist's favorite illustrators is Dr. Seuss, we took a particular interest in the paintings of Lance Bradley, whose work slightly resembles that of the good doctor. (Check out our favorite childhood book here.)
We discovered Lance's paintings at Flux, a studio owned by his girlfriend (and fellow artist) Lisa Crowder. She designs and sells jewelry there, but she also showcases the work of other local craftspeople. Earlier this month she launched Works on Wood: Organic Subconscious Paintings from the Inner Mind, Lance's first show in Austin.
Lisa told us that many of Lance's paintings started out as doodles on napkins. When we asked him why he felt compelled to turn spontaneous line drawings into giant, enamel-on-wood abstractions, well...he wasn't quite sure (thus underscoring the art's "subconscious" theme). But he takes pleasure in manipulating the scale of his sketches, he says, and has created a few life-sized landscapes of his inner mind as a result.
Austinist aspires to one day do the same, and delve deeply into the blogsciousness. We think we might be storing Transformers in there, and they sure as heck are weighing us down.
