Fun is Fun

We know a lot of you probably sport one of those heady "Kill Your Television" bumper stickers. And. That's. Cool. But even the smartest of you would probably admit that The Simpsons is not only damn good television, but one hell of a piece of artistic entertainment. So, let's all rejoice at the news today that The Simpsons has been picked up by Fox for two more years. Sure, the show may not be as good as it was ten years ago or so, and it may not necessarily be 'appointment television' anymore - a term, we guess, has gone by the wayside with the ubiquity of Tivo, but it is still funny and has become comfort-tv of sorts. Like the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes of television. Or the Tofuti sandwich-on-a-hot-day of television, or whatever the hell it is you vegetarians eat. The longest-running prime-time entertainment series is in its 17th season. The only question that remains, "Can they catch Gunsmoke?" Oh, that and what is the best Simpsons episode of all time?

  • Go back and watch last week's episode - it definitely proved for me that they've still got things to say.

Of course, it'll never be as good as the two episodes tied for my #1 slot - Mr. Sparkle (wachooo!) and 22 Short Films About Springfield.

so true... the simpson has become merely the show that comes on right before the family guy.

  • After becoming a religious watcher of "Family Guy", I've finally come to the realization tha The Simpsons is over. I love the show and the early to middle seasons were some of the best TV ever. But it's not fresh anymore. Watching the Simpsons after getting to know "Family Guy" is like watching black and white TV after you've seen color HDTV. Every now and then the Simpsons gets a laugh out of me -- but generally I find it really stale now.

Yeah - "Family Guy" is clearly a direct descendent of Simpsons. It's got a lot of similarities. But there's nothing wrong with that and it's *better*! Art begets art...

"yes, the simpsons have come a long way since an old drunk made humans out of his rabbit characters to pay off his gambling debts. who knows what adventures they'll have between now and the time the show becomes unprofitable" --troy macclure, 138th episode spectacular.

i've been watching the simpsons since the pilot, when bart and i were in the same grade. i've matured, but the show seems to have alzheimers. can they just stop while they're ahead?

best episode ever? gosh, how about everything between seasons 2 and 10. (i'm especially partial to the one where homer becomes an outsider artist and meets jasper johns. "it's like the streets are paved with water!" (in response to jmw turner's iconic venice painting))

Damn. I forgot about Mr. Sparkle.

Chilli cookoff. Johnny Cash talking coyote. "Less artsy, more fartsy."

"In America, first you get the sugar, then you get the power...then you get the women."

  • The episode where Lisa becomes a rival to Alison and Homer discovers a jacknifed sugar truck - "White Gold!!" - on the highway, if only for the madcap speech Homer gives right before his sugar melts.

"Read your town charter, boy! If foodstuffs should touch the ground, said foodstuffs shall be turned over to the village idiot. And since I don't see him, start shoveling!"

    "Homer the Heretic"

Homer discovers the joys of staying home on Sunday morning and decides to start his own religion.

    Best. Episode. Ever.
