Streets of Austin Take Down Local Actress

Paddy-crutches-cut.jpg

(UPDATE: All performances for this weekend (firm) and next (tentative) are cancelled. We'll keep you posted on this story as it develops. --JH )

In what is undoubtedly a major bummer for Zach Scott Theatre, Helen Merino, star of the recently opened and critically acclaimed production of Bad Dates has been seriously injured.

According to Michael Barnes at the Austin-American Statesman, the star of the show all about shoes...has broken her foot. Merino stepped in a pothole Sunday and will be spending the next six weeks in a cast. Ouch! She may be able to return to the role if the show is extended past its projected closing date, but in the meantime, Bad Dates director Dave Steakley is seeking a replacement actress. But here's the catch (before all y'all aspiring actresses start flooding Zach Scott with emails) -- because the production's many costumes are vital to the performance, the new actress will have to match Helen's shoe and dress size.

It's time to step up, Cinderella, but please, please be careful when doing so.

Joking aside, all of us at Austinist send our condolences to Helen, and hope to see her on stage soon after a speedy recovery!

  • Just heard from the volunteer coordinator that Jill Blackwood is replacing Helen. She'll be good. The shows for both this weekend and next weekend are cancelled; shows will start back March 30. Still looks like the run will end May 7.

$6 grand in *shoes*?? Amazing. What a great story.

Yeah, the Whisenhunt Arena is close quarters. But trying on the shoes?! Rude!

  • Poor Helen! My husband and I volunteered at the Zach Saturday and while we didn't get to see the show, during the opening party we heard a lot of buzz and positive comments about her performance and were looking forward to catching the show.

BTW, the shoes were fantastic! Volunteers had to guard the shoes from patrons who wanted to try them on. (http://danddaustinupdate.blogs...

  • The crummy thing is, this happened to her going to the premiere of The Cassidy Kids, in which she has a principle role. Total bummer. I sat by her at the premiere and she was a trooper, but definitely in pain.

Indeed, Merino is rather svelte. Finding an actress with her figure *and* talent is a mighty tall order....
