Vortex Celebrates Wymyn

Okay! Time for a little break from all the SXSW zaniness! Let's talk about women, shall we? Did you know that March is National Women's History Month? One of our favorite women, the Vortex's fabulous fearless leader Bonnie Cullum, clued us in to this fact a few days ago. To honor the so-called gentler sex, Vortex has created a menu of tasty treats for the entire month.

  • I Look Like An Egg, but I Identify As A Cookie and The Law Project, our Pick of the Week, runs for TWO NIGHTS ONLY this coming Mon/Tue. Brought to you by comedienne / actor / writer Heather Gold, this is a don't-miss event. Cookie includes a guest appearance from local musician Patrice Pike.
  • Where Are They Now opened last weekend and runs through March 24 (which is the weekend after SXSW closes). It was written & directed by Cyndi Williams; stars Shannon Grounds, T. Lynn Mikeska, and Anne Hulsman; has lighting design by Jennifer Rogers; has set design by Andrea Skola; has choreography by Mandie Pitre.... Hey! Those are all women! Whadaya know. We thought this show was fantastic, and we think you will too.
  • Exposed: Experiments in Love, Sex, Death, Art closes out the month. This is the U.S. premiere of the latest collaborative piece from Annie Sprinkle and Elizabeth Stephens. We've seen Sprinkle's performance art in the past. It is always powerful, thoughtful, and sexy. We love her! We're so lucky she loves us back, and graces us with her presence every couple of years. The show opens Tuesday, March 28 and runs straight thru to April 1. So it's five nights only. When the dates get closer, we'll remind you that you need to see this one.
We're thrilled that Bonnie has put this exciting line-up together. Oh, and on a closing note, when we visited the Vortex recently, we noticed that the place looks fabulous, and their FULL BAR (open for about three months now) is friendly and welcoming. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
