Run While You Still Can: This Week in Theatre

clown cut.jpg

Quick, citizens of Austin, to the theatre! This weekend is your last chance to down to the jiggy beat of your favorite theatre company before all those self-important dicks with well-coppered tans come to town.

Speaking of San Francisco, (and SXSW, and theatre), that brings us to our Austinist performance pick of the week. Heather Gold is coming all the way from Golden-Gate-Ville to perform at the Vortex on Monday and Tuesday night. Here’s what our IST brethren in San Fran had to say about Heather’s I Look Like An Egg, But Identify As a Cookie when she performed in their neck of the woods:

This seems like it's already getting its share of hype, but it sounded so intriguing, we decided to write it up anyway. It's billed as an interactive cooking experience with standup comedian Heather Gold, who goes through the entire process of making chocolate chip cookies during the show. And the audience gets to eat the cookies at the end. (JUST LIKE ON EMERIL!) Now, of course, this is theater, and the cookies aren't just cookies; they're the sum of the disparate ingredients of Heather's sexuality and identity.

Sounds like a good time to us. To see this as performed in conjunction with SXSWi (that other event going on in town next week), call 478-LAVA or initiate contact with the Vortex via la interweb.

Onto everything else. (As usual, there’s a bunch.)

Bad Dates
The latest from Zach Scott, this is sure to be another hot shot directing effort from Dave Steakley and co. According to Dave, Theresa Rebeck, (the playwriting badass who wrote last year’s smash hit Omnium Gatherum) originally wrote this story (about an Austin woman who moves to New York and has lots of, well, bad dates) specifically for Austin-raised actress Julie White (who moved from Austin to New York had lots of bad dates). Now the show stars Helen Merino, who just rocks. Call 476-0541 to grab yourself some tickets.

Book of Liz
This show is out in Bastrop, which you might assume spells L-A-M-E in big flashing letters, but don't assume anything! Because that makes an ass out of...well, you know. Anyway, this piece is written by David and Amy Sedaris, so we thought it was worth some attention. It’s about cheese, and at the Bastrop Opera House. 321-6283 for tickets. More info aqui, en el internet.

Greyhounds and Other Virtual Ways to Travel
We wrote about this already here, so check out that post for more info. In case you’re too lazy to click, it’s a new dance show from Ellen Bartell and Spank Dance Co, which should be reason enough for you to check it out. We’re seeing it tonight, so check back for a review before you can say “I’m too drunk from all the free beer to read anything those kids on Austinist are writing this week!” At the Blue Theater – tickets at the door.

And lastly, the other shows that have the brass kahones to keep running even while all our fair town heaves with all those music and film folk. Folk. Folk. Folk. That’s a word we use a lot down here in Texas. It means people – but more down-homey. You know. (Continued from last week.)

If you head down to Bastrop to see "Book of Liz", you owe it to yourself to try out the pizza place on the river (I believe it's called Two Brother's Pizza). Especially this weekend, you can eat wonderful pizza outdoors and then walk over to the old Opera House. Basically head towards the river and look for an oldish looking building with a large porch.
