So, SXSW Film begins tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow. Austinist realizes that we just freaked you out by saying so. Don't worry, though: we watched about 50 previews for the film festival so that you wouldn't have to. Having emerged a little bleary-eyed, we suggest the following less-heralded films as picks worthy of your time and attention:
A/K/A Tommy Chong:
Who's in it? Tommy Chong, Cheech Marin, Bill Maher, Jay Leno
What's it about? Tommy Chong was thrown in jail in 2003 for selling bongs on the internet. This is his story.
What time can I see it? Monday 3/13, Alamo South Lamar, 6:30pm.
The Last Western:
Who's in it? A bunch of old, scruffy cowboys and cowgirls.
What's it about? A mojave desert town constructed as a movie set that has become an outpost for drifters, outlaws, and ruffians.
What time can I see it? Friday 3/10, Austin Convention Center, 7pm.
Fired!:
Who's in it? Annabelle Gurwitch, Tim Allen, David Cross, Andy Dick, Illeana Douglas
What's it about? Annabelle Gurwitch was depressed about being fired from a Woody Allen-directed play. This inspired a film about the brutal experience of being fired. Her friends such as Allen and Cross contribute their own tales of woe.
What time can I see it? Sunday 3/12, Austin Convention Center, 4:30pm.
LOUDQuietLOUD: The Pixies:
Who's in it? Frank Black, Kim Deal. You know, The Pixies.
What's it about? The Pixies gained a massive following after breaking up. They got back together, made tons of cash, and fought. Also, they rocked. So that's the story.
What time can I see it? Sunday 3/12, Austin Convention Center, 9:30pm. Ask them to turn it up to 11.
Nobelity:
Who's in it? Lots of Nobel Prize winners smarter than you or Austinist.
What's it about? Texan Turk Pipkin (The Sopranos, Waiting For Guffman) was disturbed about the state of the world, and interviewed many Nobel Prize winner to get their thoughts on the future, and on how to change things for the better.
What time can I see it? Thursday 3/16, Paramount, 7:30pm.
Darkon:
Who's in it? Frodo-loving Dungeons and Dragons playing medivally dressed up hobbyists.
What's it about? See the 'Who's in it?' sentence. Basically, these people get dressed up like Lord Of The Rings and have battles and cast spells and stuff in their spare time on a massive scale. It feels like a totally compelling train wreck to watch. Be fascinated, or perhaps be repulsed.
What time can I see it? Saturday 3/11, Austin Convention Center, 6:45pm.
One disclaimer: Austinist hasn't seen these films. We've only seen the previews on SXSW.com. That said, we watched an awful lot of them, and think that your success rate will be good with these. Now, grab your Chronicle, get out your schedule grids, and get to work planning your weekend. Happy South By.
Some films have additional screening times; check SXSW.com for details. SXSW Film Passes are available at Waterloo Video for $65. Alternatively, stand-by passes are available on the door for $8 subject to availability.Image via FileThirteen.com.
