Austinist Artist Profile: HEALTHY WHITE BABY
We are not profiling Healthy White Baby because they have a name that would shock moms everywhere, but you’ve got to admit it’s pretty catchy (a reference to Raising Arizona, so relax) . And it’s not because they’re from Chicago, but that definitely makes them amazingly cool. Our friend that runs a rock magazine has been expounding on Healthy White Baby’s genius for quite some time now. We finally got around to listening to them when we noticed the unforgettable moniker on the SXSW schedule. Note to self, when the editor of an indie zine recommends a new band, take the recommendation seriously, they probably know what they’re talking about. Healthy White Baby is unpretentious, stripped down, straight forward rock. Their music is not so much simple as immediate. It’s the kind of sound that coalesces from years of dysfunction, broken up bands, bar jobs, and a wicked record collection. It’s what happens when true musicians say, “Fuck it, we’re doing this in the basement, it’s gonna be real, it’s gonna be great.” It’s the sort of band you want to blow into SXSW and kick ass.
