Turnout for the primaries hit about 10% according to the secretary of state's office. Gubernatorial candidate Chris Bell won the Democratic nomination, garnering 338,733 (64%) of the votes cast and Ricky Perry managed to claim the Republican nomination with 601,616 (84%) votes. For complete election results please visit the Travis County website.

Kinky Friedman and Carole Strayhorn have until May 11th to get 45,540 signatures from registered voters who did not participate in the primary election. It will then take 2 months for the secretary of state to verify the signatures. If Friedman and Strayhorn make the ballot they'll become the first independents to do so since Sam Houston in 1859. Roughly two hundred people joined Kinky Friedman at midnight on the steps of the capitol as he signed his campaign's first petition.

Strayhorn's petition will be available online at www.carolestrayhorn.com or by calling 512-469-9393. Information about Mr. Friedman's petition is available at www.kinkyfriedman.com or by calling 512-326-5465.
