SxSW: You're Worth It, So Go For FREE

sxsw_xx_mu2.gif

Alright. It’s a bit late for you to be trying to get reasonable entrance into anything now. So, unless you’re willing to pony-up some serious duckets for a wristband/badge/handgun, you’re going to need an alternate plan to view/hear live music. For free.

Throw free booze or maybe even some free food on there too. Fuck it!

It's the SxSW 2006 Free-Day-Party-type Party Time.

But you have to understand that the free day/night venues/parties must follow the laws of no-fee economics, so they’re typically RSVP ONLY and FIRST COME – FIRST SERVE (until capacity is filled). Just because it’s free does not mean it will be without problems. Then, of course, there’s the usual derailments and hijackings that usually go along with riding the free train:

1 lines
2 regrettable bands with regrettable hair styles
3 running out of free beer
4 lines
5 port-o-potties
6 lines for port-o-potties
7 lines for broken port-o-potties
8 lines to discover there’s no more free beer
9 lines full of drunken douche balloons from Pittsburg
10 long lines that end up being shut-down due to capacity issues, lack of sufficient beer/restrooms, or because the damn thing just ended as scheduled and you stood in an inert line the entire time (the most awesome of possibilities).

That being said, Here’s a brief selection of preferred free shows/parties that will be going off/on next week. Ju don’ need no steeen-king ba-jesss to find a good time, damnit. But don’t sleep on this shit and then come crying to the venues, ‘cause you’ll get ignored.

The vast majority of the following information was gleaned from Austin Showlist (bookmark that motherfucker and DONATE, because it’s GOOD year-round). Other good resources are Done Waiting, and SxSW Baby! Check them often for updates and whatnot.

Moving on.

Not being respected in our community at large and all, here is a list of what we (me and my pants) will be doing with our precious time (and liver).

Saturday, March 11th. (might as well start early, lushes)

10pm – 2am
Stem & Leaf Launch Party.
Right, right, right. No free booze, but there’s good music and a chance to mingle with real Austin folk before the douche parade steps off their planes in Bon Jovi boots and $800 sunglasses. We’re just sayin’…

Alternatively, there’s EROTIC CITY III over at Nasty’s (off Guadalupe near 38th, sorta behind Amy’s Ice Cream). THIS IS NOT A FREE PARTY, but DJ Starsign and The Young Adorable will be destroying the decks with whatever makes your ass move. This might be your last chance to meet up with some early “industry types” who have those connections you so sadly lack, and they might hook you up with the inside track on some underground SxSW 2006 action. We’re totally making that up, but you never know.

Sunday, March 12th

Rest up. Have some green tea and a light brunch. Toss back three mimosas and a bloody mary. Buy a puppy and abandon it at the park for all the children to love and enjoy.

Monday, March 13th

9pm – whenever
Velvet Spade (at corner of Red River and 10th)
Just show up.
Consumating (along with some other techno-type companies) is having a free happy hour at Velvet Spade. Word on the street is that there will be booze and Peel will be there to punch you in the nuts (with their music, of course). Thing’s free, so fuck it! And Peel is better than your momma! (That last part is pure speculation, seeing as how we probably haven’t met your momma, but, whatever)

Tuesday March 14th

There’s nothing really great to report, but there are shows about town. We recommend Moonlight Towers show over at Beerland (off Red River between 7th and 8th), but, that’s just because they’re pretty damned good. Check Show List Austin for details on anything else.

AND HERE’S WHERE THE BEAUTIFUL DISASTER BEGINS…

Wednesday, March 15th

Noon – whenever, man
Cream Vintage near 25th and Guadalupe (Campus area)
Just show up, no RSVP
The Chapters and Clap!Clap! along with some other bands. Free beer = hell yes.

1pm – 10pm
Red 7 (off 7th just east of Red River, across from Sidebar)
Just show up.
Austinist/Gothamist/Alarm Day party at Red 7. Check the link. Gift bags, Ghostland Observatory (who the hell are they?), The Ark, Levy, and a whole host of others. DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS. We aren't just saying that because we breathed it into being. It's the tip-top. God's honest.

Midnight – 6am
Red Bull House (down by La Zona Rosa, in a creepy warehouse, it should be beyond obvious which place it is when you get down there)
You better have already done your RSVP to this one. We got FLOODED with requests… so it shall be BABOOOOOOOOM!
Austinist – Gothamist - Finger On the Pulse – Misprint –Alarm Magazine - Progress Coffee - Factory People - Austin Mopeds – Scandal Scouts - Car Stereo (Wars) - Super!Alright! - Morning After - Your Extended Family
Red Bull House

If the Austinist afterparty doesn't work out for you, then kick it with ATX Magazine:

11pm – 4am (ish)
SxSW wristbands get in free
Everyone else: minimum donation (not sure what that might mean)
ATX Magazine will be throwing down off 5th and I35, probably in the lot next to Progress Coffee. Complimentary beer! Bring your own liquor, though (flasks are totally the shit). Loxsly (an Austinist favorite), For Those Who Know, Brothers and Sisters, Modena Vox, Lomita, and half a dozen special guests. Check it.

Thursday, March 16th

11am – 5pm

Hydrate, do not operate any heavy machinery, stop crying and go to sleep. For the love of Pete. Add any other parties you’d like in the comments, let everyone know if RSVP links get all fulled-up, and CORRECT anything you see above with snide remarks in the comments. Contrary to popular opinion, we do dig the snide. Not always. But sometimes.

Word to all your mothers. (We seriously haven’t met them. Swear.)

Hello all Austin lovelies - The RSVP for the Full Irish Breakfast day-party is incorrect above. Sorry for the confusion here. The party is free and open to public but priority invites, ie industry folks, please send your full name and affiliation to info@musicfromireland.org. Thanks and see you in Tejas! - Selene Angier/The Bleedin Bleedins

Damn Craig good work!! Now if I could only get into to the Austinist after party.....

What about the ATX Magazine party? It's the same time as the Austinist party, but the lineup sounds killer. From http://www.atxmagazine.com/sxsw_announce.php

11:10PM Loxsly - Austin, Texas
11:30PM For Those Who Know - Austin, Texas
11:50PM Brothers and Sisters - Austin, Texas
12:10AM Modena Vox - Columbus, Ohio
12:40AM Lomita - San Marcos, Texas
1:10AM SPECIAL GUEST - Sheffield, United Kingdom
1:40AM SPECIAL GUEST - London, United Kingdom
2:10AM SPECIAL GUEST - London, United Kingdom
2:50AM SPECIAL GUEST - Montreal, Quebec
3:30AM SPECIAL GUEST - Austin, TX
4:10AM SPECIAL GUEST - we're not telling, see comment below.

The guests are rumored to include Harrisons, Archie Bronson Angels, Black Angels, Duke Spirit, and Artic Monkeys among others. The Beastie Boys are also in town earlier that day for the convention. Maybe the Boys are the late night guest to compete with Echo & The Bunnymen?

It's BYOL too, with unlimited beer if you've got a wristband or pay a few bucks at the door to help defray the costs.

Sounds like a lot of fun.

This lineup is insane! How many bands are playing and where is this in east austin?

This VICE lineup is insane! How many bands are playing and where is this in east austin? The website tells who is playing but is this hard to get to?

Thanks for the plug! Uh...I fixed your party info on the showlist...

My apologies for the screw-up Selene. Fixed it though.

David, you are most welcome. Enjoy the parties as all the promoters and bands are working their asses off for your pleasure.

The ATX party is up now, Declan. Thanks for the heads-up!

John Martin: The Vice parties are mainly at The Victory Grill and The Longbranch Inn, both of which are east on 11th from I35, like, three or four blocks. Something like that.

Many thanks, Dan. www.showlistaustin.com is the total shit, and everyone here knows it (again, it works YEAR ROUND)

douche balloons.... tee hee

It's not over after Saturday!! Don't forget about Fuzz Club Sunday night at Beerland. Bring your hungover asses to the dance party!

DJ Sue
The Ugly Beats (Austin)
The Mojo Filters (LA)
