Current Voter Turnout

So far early voter turnout for the primary elections is half of what it was during the last gubernatorial election year in 2002. Early vote totals show only two percent of eligible voters turned out for the primary. These numbers could either reflect voter apathy or more importantly this might be an indication that the voters are ready for an alternative to the current two political parties.

"We've been flooded by phone calls from people who are saying they've decided not to vote in the primary and they want to know when they can sign the petition to get her on the ballot," Mark Sanders, from Carole Keeton Strayhorn’s campaign, said.

"I don't think there's any other explanation other than there's a large group of people out there getting behind the independent candidates," Kinky Friedman’s campaign manager Dean Barkley said.
