We're Proud to Be Texan . . . Sometimes.

txflagcrop.jpg

Today is Texas Independence Day, which used to be an official holiday, and now is just a day in Women’s History Month. Seriously though, those of us who have lived in Texas for most of our lives remember March 2 as Texas Independence Day, even if we don’t get the day off. We are not always brimming over with pride for our state, but today we'll think of the things we love about Texas (and feel free to add on to our list in the comments):

  • the rich cultural heritage of the state
  • Tex-Mex food
  • San Antonio
  • Texas music
  • Blue Bell ice cream
  • Nolan Ryan (Ed. note: his arm, not his politics)
  • Roger Clemens (Ed. note: the pitcher, not the man)
  • Mildred Ella "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias
  • Molly Ivins
  • Shiner Bock
  • Tito's Vodka
  • Independence Brewery
  • Sam Houston
  • Stephen F. Austin
  • Bob Bullock
  • Barbara Jordan
  • Lady Bird Johnson (and her wildflowers)
  • the Hill Country
  • Austin (of course)

While we may not always agree with the politics of our state, we'll always look on these things with fondness. Feliz cumpleaños, Texas!

Some of us still get the day off. We love Texas Independence Day. But, then again, we also get the day off for Confederate Heroes Day. The same week as MLK Day. (which we also get off).
