Happy Birthday: The Daily Juice Pulls the Hat Trick

juicebanner.jpg

Austinist favorite and Barton Springs Rd. stalwart The Daily Juice is celebrating its Third Birthday this month. We popped in to give our congratulations and to sip on the juice of the day: fresh coconut water, bananas and spirulina, served right out of a chopped-open coconut. We make into the Juice whenever we are thirsting for some fruity or veggie goodness, and sometimes just to shoot the breeze with Co-Owner Matt Shook and his hilarious and gregarious cast of characters/co-workers.

Shook and his partner Keith Wahrer purchased the store, (1625 Barton Springs Road) for which they once worked, back in March of 2003. The Daily Juice offers a wide variety of organic vegetable and fruit juices and smoothies. Customers can make their own or order from a broad array of juices and smoothies already devised by the juice masterminds. The store also carries delicious vegetarian and vegan food products, from the Vegan Snicker Doodle to an assortment of treats offered by Baraka Foods Co., a natural food company owned by Wahrer.

The Daily Juice has become a favorite stop for nourishment and replenishment among locals, and one gets a real sense of community after spending just a few minutes inside the unique store, carved from a cave that was once used as a hideout by the notorious Newton Brothers. Flyers adorn the walls announcing band performances and classes on spirituality and nutrition, as employee-selected music plays over the speakers. "We don't listen to satellite radio here," Shook states proudly. "No middle management telling us what to listen to; we pick it ourselves." Customers can even peruse the discount record bin and take home some Juice favorites to spin on their tables at home.

The Daily Juice is open from 8AM - Sunset daily and offers a 15% discount to cyclists, Daily Juice t-shirt wearers and single moms. Concerning the last group of beneficiaries, Shook says, "These ladies have it hard enough. And lord knows the government isn’t doing enough to help them." Amen.

It is this attitude of community and positivity, along with the best damn juice in town that keeps bringing customers back time and again. So pop in for a delicious drink, wish the guys a happy birthday, listen to some good music and grab yourself a Whiz Bang, a Chiller, a wheat grass shot, or create your own special concoction.

*Go in this month and tell 'em we sent you and receive 10% off the drink of your choice.

Here's to many more years of being a great neighbor, Daily Juice.

Our smoothies are more expensive because we believe it makes most people want them more.

  • Yeah, I'm with HC. Sometimes you go and it's great, sometimes those bitches try to punish you for being thirsty.

    Wheatsville is so Whark!

Yeah, but they don't have the Nark Yark Cark Tark Bark at Weatsville.

I love the smoothies at the Daily Juice but I rarely go there anymore. I like the idea of the "attitude of community and positivity," but I've waited in line one too many times while the staff engages in long conversations with friends and/or regulars before they finally get around to acknowledging my presence and taking my order. I'm usually dressed in business attire when I go in and I often feel that I'd be treated better if I looked more like a south Austin hippie type but I don't plan to start sporting tie-dyes just to get decent service. Instead I just go to Wheatsville where the smoothies are cheaper and the folks are nicer.

Get one of the Shark brothers (Jark or Mark)to make their special smoothie the Nark Yark Cark Tark Bark. Think New York Cheesecake meets Jerry Tarkanian meets an Oak Tree. Also if you can out pun Mark Shark he will give you the keys to the store but Jark Shark keeps his job no matter what.
