Dog Owners: Unite Tomorrow Night!

slicedpatiopooches.jpg

Austnist LOVES dogs. We really do.

Tomorrow evening (Thursday, March 2nd) at 6pm, there will be a hearing at City Hall to determine whether or not dogs will be allowed, legally, into an Austin food establishment.

You see, currently, it is technically illegal for a dog to be present in any Austin eatery, even though many places overlook the law in favor of customer preference. And those places have been coming under increased fire for having such relaxed pooch policies.

The specific issue at hand relates to THE PATIOS, not the interiors of an Austin restaurant. This is an obvious measure to ensure that the kitchen would be safe from anyone’s ill-mannered hound(s). Since the patio is essentially unprotected from not only the elements, but unlicensed & unregulated animals (raccoons, grackles, tumor-eyed pigeons, opossums, etc), why not allow an animal that IS vaccinated and licensed to ward off the vermin?

We’re all for dogs on patios, even though we don’t own one ourselves. So head to City Hall and voice your opinion on the dog-patio issue tomorrow evening.

I'm going to open up a place with unruly tantrum throwing kids yelling into cellphones while riding around on ravenous hell hounds handing out parking tickets.

  • ...and kids.

  • odam

the week in review: people have strong feelings about parking tickets and dogs.

Kids are more annoying than any dog I've ever seen. And you know what's more annoying than the annoying kids. The dumbass annoying parents who sit there and carry on with their conversation and drinks and food while the child crawls on the floor tugging at my jeans and then starts laughing when they see he's bothering someone else. Maybe I'll just start kicking them away from and see if the unattending parents care then.

Ban children under 12 from patios and then I'll think about letting you try to ban dogs for some reason other than - "I'm jealous and don't have one"

I'll take an oversized Lab over a little yappy kick-me dog any day. Well-behaved dogs should be allowed to hang with their owners on a restaurant patio. Trouble-makers or aggressive dogs should not. But I don't think anyone is advocating that "bad" dogs should be allowed to stay. I just don't think good dogs should be banned. Most dogs are a lot better behaved and well-mannered than most kids and you don't see anyone trying to ban them (kids).

  • And I want to be sitting next to some screaming 2-foot temper tantrum? I want to listen to one side of half a dozen cellphone conversations while I'm trying to have a quiet morning with my book and my coffee?

You go out in public, you have to deal with other people. And you have to hope that people use good judgment and good manners.

If your dog isn't quiet or well behaved, then he or she should stay home. Just like you shouldn't bring your ill-mannered brats with you. If your normally quiet, well-behaved dog suddenly starts barking nonstop or is sniffing other patrons' food, then you need to take your dog and leave. Same should go for kids who scream or run around or otherwise disrupt other patrons. Same should go for people who can't maintain a reasonable volume when talking on the cell phone.

There are certain places that I avoid because of the screaming kids or the obnoxious use of cell phones or just the general atmosphere. But that doesn't mean that we should ban children, cell phones, or pretentiousness. (Well, okay, maybe that last one.) If you don't like dogs, don't go to places that allow them. Austin is a big city; you'll have nondoggy options.

  • Edward

Old Yeller, dog owners have a responsibility to keep their pets well behaved and under control in a public place and and should be asked/made to leave if they don't. No one is suggesting otherwise. As you point out, irresposible dog owners are a hassle to everyone, including other dog owners.

  • old yeller

no, i want them to have the choice, i just want to be sitting next to little ms. neato torpedo and her two oversized labs that she can't control while she beems in her glow of self-satisfaction. but i will handle it. or lock myself in your basement.

  • Edward

Old Yeller, the issue here is not about dog owners, but the government taking away business owners' right to allow dogs if they choose. Are you for that? Whose being self-righteous here?

  • As the smoking ban proved, a minority of voters will most likely choose to deny private businesses an option of how to run their business.

They don't want choice, they want you do behave according to their rules.

  • old yeller

oh, i love dogs. my husband and i have three myself. i just don't like self-righteous dog owners who think it is so damn neat and important to have their dogs with them every time they go somehwere.

  • Whatever, Katz is lame. Lame, I say. Lame. Dog hater! You too, old yeller -- why, if you hadn't died like that other dog I loved in "Where the Red Fern Grows", I'd give you a piece of my mind!

(Sorry about the multiple comments before, that, er...wasn't my fault)

  • Edward

Old Yeller, no one is attempting to shove anything down your throat. At least not here. In fact, doesn't the current law not allowing dogs at all impose *your* "wonderful lifestyle" on local businesses and residents? The proposed ordinance change doesn't force anyone to do anything. All it would do is give business owners the *option* of allowing dogs. If you don't like dogs, then you will have the choice of not patronizing places that do. What's wrong with that?

  • odam

Katz obviously is opopsed cause he doesn't want anything that makes any other option more attractive than his. Punkass

  • I just read the KEYE report, and saw that Marc Katz (owner of Katz's) is opposed to the measure -- even though he doesn't have an outdoor patio at his restaraunt. WTF? What gives? Why does he care if other people happen to LIKE dogs.

I knew there was a reason I thought Katz's was lame.

  • old yeller

what's next, people are going to get to where those annyoing klippit-klopppy cycling shoes into bars? what's with all these self-righteous, self-important people trynig to shove thier wonderful lifestyles down my throat. i don't go to where benjy lives and eat bood out of his bowl? great, you love your dog. get a room.

This issue has proven to be surprisingly contentious with outspoken opposition from some irrational and intolerant, yet vocal and powerful local figures. So spread the word and if you have an opinion *SHOW UP AT THE HEARING* Otherwise, Austin dogs may permanently remain in the dog house.

  • odam

considernig the number of vemirn i have seen in restaurants, canines are the least of the problem

  • Amen and Alleluia! I can't wait to go back to Mozart's with puppy in tow.
