Watching It, Watching Me: Men of Fashion

In my other life (you know, the one that doesn't exist) I wear Chanel. Maybe some Calvin Klein and Cynthia Rowley as well. Oh, what the heck, let's throw in a few Vera Wang pieces. This is the life where I'm a socialite with an awesome body and a big pocketbook. In my real life I have to dress for the roles of Mommy and Mental Health Counselor. I am all about Old Navy and Target brands. I seem to own a lot of khakis, skirts, and striped tops. Now and then I'll splurge on a J. Jill dress. No one is going to look at me and think "fashion goddess". I have never been, nor do I ever plan on going, to FactoryPeople. Once in awhile I find myself browsing through the awesome offerings at By George, but I walk out pretty quickly. Why face the depression? $400 dollars for an item of clothing? Never gonna happen.

Still, I wouldn't be a girl if I didn't love and covet wonderful clothes. At a very young age I tuned in every Saturday to watch Elsa Klensch and her fashion show.

jay!.jpgThe only reason I didn't watch Project Runway last year is because I heard about it late and figured I'd missed too much to jump in. This season I made the effort and I beyond love it. It is the show I most look forward to every week. More than Lost. More than Gilmore Girls. And I'm not surprised that I gush over Isaac Mizrahi. Or that the new Bravo series, Project Jay, has me giddy. I've started watching Season 1 of Project Runway on DVD and have grown enamored with Austin Scarlett and Jay McCarroll. After an evening with Jay on his new Bravo special, I'm ready to be his best friend. I probably wouldn't be caught dead in a Jay McCarroll original (and I don't think anyone would be too excited to see one on me), but dammit if he doesn't crack me up. Dammit if I don't cry with him when Heidi Klum refuses to wear the dress he designed for her. Dammit if I don't feel his pain when he can't find a decent flat in NYC, nevermind that I've never set foot in the state of New York. I'm telling you, this is addictive television. Awesome personality + talent + big city + celebrties + dad who chews tobacco and worries about his nephews becoming "sissy boys" = riveting! Where did Jay come from? Or, the more correct question, how did Jay happen? Never mind. I'm just glad he did.

Isaac is on Style every night at 6pm and again at 10pm. While I don't DVR it, I do catch it whenever possible. Isaac Mizrahi is one of my favorite fashion icons. I love his clothes and I love his own personal style--the loafers, the polos, the adorable ties.

isaac.jpgWhen I watch Isaac I'm immediately transported to a spotless, stylish, happy and happening pad where all the cool people come to visit. There is giggling and gossiping and great music and yummy food to sample. You get to hang with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jon Favreau and Margaret Cho. Isaac calms me. He makes me feel better about my life. He makes it totally cool to buy your wardrobe at Target, and for that, I love him.

I love all my men of fashion. I love all the designers on this season's Project Runway, but am especially rooting for Daniel V. Chloe is awesome, but Daniel is transcendent. Santino is a total narcissist, but he makes me laugh. I like to keep entertaining people around, you know.

Now speaking of fashion, did you all realize that you could order cool stuff from Will & Grace right from NBC.com? Weird or genius? Coveting those lime bubble PJ's Grace has? Here you go. I wouldn't mind some of Will's Origo Dinnerware. I have a birthday coming up in May. Send it to Coffey at Austinist Headquarters. Thanks! and Kisses!

Hey TV Heads, The new Apprentice starts tonight! The Donald may not be the most fashionable guy (it doesn't matter if he's wearing Ralph Lauren, I'll never get past the bad hair), but he is good TV. I'm there!
