A couple of years ago, some people were quietly rapping Vince Young for not having the intelligence to play the position in football that is most demanding on a player's smarts. All of those concerns seemingly went out the window as Vince took the Horns to an undefeated season and National Championship last year.
Well, the doubters are back. Apparently (or allegedly) Vince scored a miserable 6 (out of 50) on the Wonderlic test at the NFL combines. The Wonderlic is a 50 question exam with a 12-minute time limit that is used to examine a player's ability to learn. The test results are supposed to be kept private, but they are often leaked, especially when they are this bad. There has been confusion as to Vince's poor showing. Some say the test was either not administered or graded properly, while others say he was given the test a second time and scored 16. Better, but still not amazing. However, Vince's agent has said that scouting combine officials assured him that the "6" was a false result and that the real test results would be made known at the end of the combine.
To put it in some perspective, last years #1 pick Alex Smith scored a 40. The most recent QB product to go to the pros from the 40 Acres, Longhorn Chris Sims, scored a 22. But since when as anyone won a Super Bowl by taking a test. As Hollywood Henderson once said of Terry Bradshaw, "He couldn't spell 'cat' if you spotted him the 'c' and the 'a.' And last we checked, Bradshaw has a handful of rings and a trophy case full of SB MVP's.

Sean Jones, a member of Oakland's personnel department, put little stock in Young's Wonderlic score. "All I need to know about Vince Young is that he came up with one of the greatest performances ever in the Rose Bowl," Jones said. "In the fourth quarter, I saw (USC coach) Pete Carroll throw every kind of blitz at Vince. I saw Vince read the blitz and beat the blitz. I don't care what his Wonderlic score is. The only score I care about is 41-38."
We couldn't have said it better ourselves. In the end, most of the damage done here will be that of embarrassment to Young and not so much anything to do with his actual draft location. As for who the Houston Texans will take with their #1 pick - Vince or Reggie? Most signs still point to Reggie, but recent rumors out of New York indicate that the NY Jest would like to draft Matt Leinart or Jay Cutler (of Vanderbilt) with the number one pick and would be willing to trade up. The Texans could maybe get DE and sack specialist John Abraham from the Jets and then use the #4 pick to take all-world OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson of Virginia Tech to help provide protection for David Carr.
