Austin Art Wants You!

Hey. hipster. Do you often find yourself sitting around your apartment thinking, "Christ! If only someone would let me have a say in how funds were distributed to local arts organizations, I could really make a difference in this town!" (And, really, don't we all?)

Well focus up, daydreamer, because here's your shot. The City of Austin is currently seeking review panelists for Cultural Arts Funding Programs. These are the people that decide which arts groups get funding, and who'll be eating stale bread for another fiscal year. According to their website, here's what you'd be doing:

Selected panelists’ primary responsibilities are to read contract applications and participate in public review panel meetings for one or two days each summer over a multi-year term. Panelists review and score each application based on pre-established criteria and their recommendations are forwarded to the City for consideration and possible funding.

This is a vital part of arts in Austin, and -- joking aside -- we think it would be supremely awesome if an Austinist reader (you know, someone young, smart, savvy, witty, in-the-know, highly attractive, etc) got the gig this year. According to Vincent Kitch (in charge of Cultural Contracts/Cultural Funding for the city) the deadline is "soon", so we suggest you get a move on. For an application form, or more information, visit this helpful website, or email Vincent.

  • Disclaimer: I'm not incredibly familiar with Texas Commission on the Arts, but as far as I understand, they're a seperate body governing funds for all arts organizations in the State of Texas, where as this particular opportunity is with the group that deals with the City of Austin only.

For more info on TCA, you might want to check out this website: http://www.arts.state.tx.us/

  • So how is this different than the Texas Commission on the Arts which is the state agency that decides which cultural and art groups get funds?
