Weekend Picks
Another victim of the fires that ravaged KOOP's former residence was Sweatbox Studios, the "home to generations of punk and garage rock" and one of Austin's more historic recording spaces. Over at Emo's tonight they're hosting a benefit show with Poison 13, Knife in the Water, The Meat Purveyors, and Possessed by Paul James. (Friday, Emo's, 10pm)
On Saturday, the Rhizome Collective hosts the first-ever Clay Hands, a new benefit series that hopes to "raise awareness of local non-profits and promote local talent in music and art." If that sounds familiar, it's probably because Austin is rife with similar organizations all hoping to help each other -- and our community -- out. (Way to go, us!) The stupendous lineup includes Ink, Peter and the Wolf, Tacks the Boy Disaster, Shapes and Sizes (Victoria BC), Loxsly, Nick Arthur, Carlos Rosales-Silva, Max Voss-Nester, Cherie Weaver, and The Second Line Social. Free beer will be provided (like we need to bold that), courtesy of Real Ale. Proceeds for this inaugural bash will go to MonkeyWrench Books. (Saturday, Rhizome Collective, 8pm)
And back on Sixth Street, the mayhem maestros of Misprint Magazine are putting together yet another showcase at Flamingo Cantina to preview some of the bands playing at SXSW. Download their latest release (#5), "The Get Wasted Issue." here, and prepare yourself for sets by The Ugly Beats, Lomita, Til We're Blue or Destroy, and Zom Zoms. (Saturday, Flamingo Cantina, God Knows When)
You might as well drink clear through the rest of the weekend, which you can accomplish easily enough over at The Peacock. They'll be hosting the rescheduled benefit party for John Mueller's BBQ, which recently lost their lease and is currently searching for a new location. Weather permitting, starting at noon they'll be serving up heaping platefuls of barbeque and other smoked meats by John Mueller BBQ, accompanied by music mixed by DJ Mike Mariconda. Choose your favorite poison: beer, bloody marys, peachicks and mimosas will all be available. (Sunday, The Peacock, Noon)
Did we forget something? You should probably let us know.
