Willie Records an Homage to the Gay Cowboy

Back in the late 80's a friend slipped Willie Nelson a copy of a song written by Texas songwriter Ned Sublette in the earl 80s. The song contained lyrics like "What did you think that all them saddles and boots was about?" and "Inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out." Not quite, "Whiskey River," is it?

Sublette said he always imagined Willie singing it, and this Valentine's Day he got his wish. According to his record label, Willie went into his studio last year and recorded "Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly (Fond of Each Other)." The song was released yesterday after debuting on Howard Stern's satellite radio show and is available for purchase exclusively through iTunes.

We applaud Willie for having the courage to record a song that he liked regardless of what some close-minded people may think. Of course, Willie has made a living of being his own man. From helping establish Farm Aid to supporting Dennis Kucinich and speaking out against the war, this is one artist who has never waited to see which way the wind was blowing before speaking his mind. And if he ruffles the dusters of a few good ol' boys, well, that's just too bad. The legend grows.
