A new exhibit at the Texas State History Museum provides a glimpse, through its relics, into a shameful and imporant part of US history. The exhibit, "A Slave Ship Speaks: Wreck of the Henrietta Marie," opened earlier this week and runs through April 15.
The Henrietta Marie exhibit chronicles the lives of 250 slaves and the 18 seamen who manned the ship and managed its human cargo. The exhibit features interactive displays and hundreds of artifacts, from pewter cups and muskets to navigational equipment and iron shackles, the exhibit explores the early history of the transatlantic slave trade, recreating its triangular route from London to West Africa to the Americas. There will also be a reservations-only discussion at the museum on March 26th entitled "Extraordinary Ships, Extraordinary Stories."
