Caps and Jones This Friday at Barcelona

Dear lord, we hope with all our might that Caps and Jones (The Illegible/Dubious DJ Caps and Ruffian/Pandemonium Jones aka William Creely and Brian Curtis) bring their much-interweb-hyped ability to kill it, and that they show Austin how the killing is properly done. They’ll be in town to cross genres and split styles this Friday at Barcelona. We trust that they will be pulling out the ever-irreverent Brooklyn secessionist sensibility and wield it rightly… in our opinion, that’s all we’re really missing here in Austin.

AUSTINIST: So, You know you're going to be drinking ten drinks tonight. What ten are they? Specific order? (Much applause if you shoot Zima and grenadine. Through a syringe.)
BRIAN CURTIS (Jones): We will probably both be drinking copious amount of mexican and texan beer. I might start the night with some whiskey or some southern comfort, and later in the night some sadistic son of a bitch might buy us tequila shots and we might be drunk enough to accept them (as happened in Seattle). However, i'll probably be going:
1) southern comfort and redbull [sweet jesus]
2) double southern comfort, neat [super sweet jesus!]
3&4) decent tequila and a texican beer [decent to who?]
5-7) texican beer [Looooooooone Star]
8) tequila [not so sure about the whisky-tequila layering]
9) six beers [nice]
10) soco and lime shot with hot bartender [good qualifier on that one]
?) mystery drinks brought to the turntables by well-wishers and boozehounds (please no jaegermeister) [Jager it is!]

That was the response we got from one half of Caps and Jones, the Brooklyn-spawn, binge-drinking wax-slappers who will be on the decks this Friday night at that basement place: Barcelona. They’ll be fucking it up with Witnes from Houston, alongside Laura of Flossin. Matt Sonzala of Houstonsoreal fame is doing the heavy lifting to bring everyone to town.
Yeah, it was really immature to ask these professionals about their drinking intentions, but whatever. It’s important to some of us.
The thing about being a good DJ is that there are so many elements that need to be considered. It isn’t just about having deep crates, beat-matching skills, and ridiculously drunk patrons (although those things can work wonders at a show). There’s an uncharted method for getting a group of strange drinkers to really let loose. To help them feel at home.
Caps and Jones are reputed to have this secret skill.
In fact, we happened to be at their regular Saturday night venue, Savalas in Williamsburg, one random night and their mixing… well, let’s just say it touched us. And by “touched” we mean “caused us to want to get shit-faced and dance like it was an Irish wake”. Which is to say, we really, really enjoyed ourselves. And we will again, on Friday.
SPIN Magazine was so impressed with their off-the-cuff stylings that they listed their mix: Moving in Stereo as #32 on their Top 50 Best Albums of 2005. Here’s Jon Dolan’s blurb:
Just when you thought you'd withstood your last mash-up, two NYU grads flip a jillion samples covering every genre imaginable into a coming-of-age story about geeking out in the era of instant access and falling in love with America as it loses its soul. It's as if some random blogger cranked out Sentimental Education, only this one has ODB freestyles, punk and reggaeton, Fabolous nicing up Toto, Vietnam flashbacks and evangelical crazies, blurring murderation and liberation in music that's proudly illegal and utterly radical.
Well, well, well. It doesn’t get much stranger than a rag like SPIN promoting such a left-of-center duo as this. We aren’t so sure the whole “mash-up” label is appropriate. They spin music together. There may be some blend-over, incidental mashing, but that doesn’t appear to be the purpose.
A better look at how these gentlemen operate can be found here. We fully expect this show to happily degenerate into something raucous, fevered, and properly manic. A billion bloggers can’t be wrong, can they?

AUSTINIST: If you were the Vice Prez, would you have aimed for the leg? Or just stuck with the headshot?
BRIAN: I would have let the other guy do his thing and just shot myself directly in the foot.
