Good Onya, Boomerang's

We were excited to learn about the opening of the new restaurant Boomerang's Gourmet Veggie & Meat Pies because, doggonit, we support the eating of savory pies. Once upon a time we spent a year in Australia and we grew to love the pie as a meal. Meat pies and veggie pies are sold at street vendors in Australian cities like hot dogs in Chicago. The Australian pies are traditionaly meat and gravy, but the popularity of the pie has broadened the menu. We happened to spend our year abroad in Adelaide and often found ourselves slathering chicken and veggie pies with ketchup for a cheap and tasty lunch. That was about fourteen years ago and we haven't had a veggie pie since. Until a few days ago.
Apart from a few sides like salad, soup, and chips and queso (this is Austin, after all), Boomerang's is all pies. They offer three types of chicken pies, four beef, two vegetarian, and a choice of two styles of pizza pies. We tried the Mediterranean Veggie made with a wheat crust. It was tasty and worth the $4.50 price, but we have to say we were more than a little disappointed that there weren't more basic and traditional veggie pies to choose from. Our other vegetarian choice is a Spicy Mexican Veggie made with squash, black beans, red beans, jalapeno, peppers, pico de gallo, and cheddar combined in something called "Colorado" sauce. Very Texan.
Boomerang's is housed in the building that used to be Half Price Books on Guadalupe and 31st Street. Next door is Celebration, a large New Agey gift store. It's a modern looking joint, fresh and green. You may sit and enjoy your pie or take it to go. Heck, you could even order a four pack of frozen ones and eat them at home throughout the week.
We commend the effort to combine Australian food with Austin tastes, but we'd be happy to see a few more simple choices. As it stands there is one "traditonal beef pie" on the menu. Otherwsie you choose from flavors like BBQ, Thai Chicken, and Spicy Mexican. Interesting, but sometimes one is in the mood for boring. That is to say meat and veggies.
But it's a cool place and a cooler idea. Go get yourself a pie already.
