Rock This Party

Our friends over at Austin-based music blog Depraved Fangirls are throwing their first party ever this Sunday over at the Longbranch Inn. And, naturally, the devilishly delightful dynamos have come up with a theme that's both holiday-appropriate and downright fun:

Love and a .45, it's called. And here, straight from the source, is the low-down:

There was a time when the seven-inch was it: a standard, the medium of a scene at four minutes per side; pop music in a readily available package when the world spun at forty-five revolutions per minute. Join Shannon and Michaela from depravedfangirls.org, along with host DJ Aquaman Chill (Teleport Door), DJ Jennifer of Ear Candy (KOOP) and Ramesh & Jason from Voxtrot for the inaugural presentation of Love and a .45, where we bring it back with jukebox platters, spindle adapters, and twelve-inch maxi-singles. We're also expecting a few special guests including Sean Oh No (The Arm), DJ Hobo D, Jerel de Marte, Angry Robot, and Miguel Hinojosa (Christmas Mountains Records).

It's our first ever party! Come on down. (Like on The Price is Right...only different.) Be warned. Someone might make you dance!

And, more from their website:

Just like the instructions say, bring your own 45s! Last April at the Circle Bar in New Orleans, Michaela attended a 45 dance party. Though part of the charm of the event was that each DJ set was played entirely with seven-inch, 45RPM records, we welcome 45s of all shapes and sizes, and occasional 33s if you make a good case. The genre door is wide open. Our only requirement is that you love every record you play, and that your selection has a reasonable amount of flow. Please email us if you'd like to rock the east side with your mad skillz. Don't be shy. We know you've always wanted to play "Buffalo Stance" back to back with "Turkey in the Straw." So do we. And don't even think that Shannon won't be bringing Pretty Poison's "Catch Me I'm Falling" with the original Spanish vocal.

And while some of us have the dubious honor of venturing to Houston in order to get plastered at the Basquiat exhibit's closing party, the rest of you ought not to pass this up.

Because we love these girls.

  • Thanks for the mention, Austinist! Sorry you didn't make it (though we were glad to see a few A-ist staffers in the crowd...!) -- it was a total blast! Don't worry, there's already plans in motion to have another edition very, very soon.
