We Heart Hoover's

hoover.jpg

The thing we most love about Hoover's is that Hoover is the guy's FIRST NAME. Not his last name. His last name is Alexander. Man, we wish our first name were Hoover.

But of course there is a lot more to love about Hoover's Cooking, the comfort food and BBQ joint on Manor. There's the food, the friendly staff, the decor, and the prices. We love to go and order the three vegetable plate. We load up on starches--the mac & cheese, the fries, the mashed potatoes. Okay, sometimes we will get the candied yams or buttered carrots. One can't go wrong, really.

We love how the menu is split into residences. There is the Sandwich Hut, the Smoke House, and The Fire Station. The menu is comfort-food-eclectic, and takes pride in representing a mix of cultural heritages. One can order Southern Fried Pork Chops or Jamaican Jerk Chicken.

The atmosphere is comfortable, the decor spare, but friendly. The white room is filled with wooden booths and tables. Posters on the wall all depict food. Your meal comes in white dishes or on butcher paper on top of a red tray. It's a place where the food is the show and there is no doubt that Mr. Hoover Alexander is a man that takes great pride in making great food. Don't get us started on the desserts.

If you haven't had their fried okra or BBQ- chicken please do! I have a healthy appetite and always have enough to take home for another dinner. (note that I say dinner. NOT snack!)

totally with you on the decor, slight....

  • I have to disagree that the decor is worthy of love. It's the biggest drawback of an otherwise great restaurant. The white ceiling, walls, and floor need more colors to break them up. And the food posters were played in the 80s. But I'll take a chicken salad po-boy or some candied yams any day.

They're opening a location up North -- 183 & Anderson Mill. I talked to someone at the Manor Road location, and he said, "We hope, we *hope* to be open by the end of this month."

    I hope so, too!

    and weekend BRUNCH.

  • There is always LOTS of food on the plate, and the jalapeno spinach is mega-spicy. I enjoy spicy food, but I could only eat about four or five bites of the spinach without my eyes tearing. LOVE Hoovers.

My favorites are the Cajun meatloaf or the open-faced Elgin Sausage sandwich. But definitely save room for desert.
