Austin City Limits is pretty nifty, we'll admit. But let's face it: the lineup for Coachella, ACL's glammed-up West Coast sibling in the desiccated wastelands near Joshua Tree, has all but reigned supreme these last few years. And this year, they're at it again; earlier this week they announced the full roster for the two-day festival, to be headlined this year by Depeche Mode (huzzah!) and ... Tool (huh?).
The entire lineup:
Saturday, April 29th
Depeche Mode, Franz Ferdinand, Sigur Ros, Common, Damian Marley, Atmosphere, Carl Cox, My Morning Jacket, Ladytron, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Tosca, Cat Power, Animal Collective, Hard-Fi, Derrick Carter, Devendra Banhart, She Wants Revenge, the Walkmen, The Juan Maclean, Audio Bullys, Imogen Heap, Lady Sovereign, Deerhoof, the Duke Spirit, Editors, stellastarr*, Lyrics Born, Matt Costa, the New Amsterdams, The Zutons, Platinum Pied Pipers, White Rose Movement, Chris Liberator, Colette, Joey Beltram, Hybrid, Wolfmother, the Like, Living Things, Nine Black Alps, the Section Quartet, Infadels, Youth Group, Shy FX & T Power, Infusion.
Sunday, April 30
Tool, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party, Paul Oakenfold, Scissor Sisters, Matisyahu, James Blunt, TV on the Radio, Sleater-Kinney, Mogwai, Coheed and Cambria, Gnarls Barkley, Coldcut, Phoenix, Digable Planets, Amadou & Mariam, Little Louie Vega, Mylo (DJ Set), Seu Jorge, Wolf Parade, the Go! Team, Kaskade, Metric, Art Brut, Dungen, the Dears, Jamie Lidell, The Magic Numbers, Los Amigos Invisibles, Jazzanova, Michael Mayer, Mates of State, Gilles Peterson, Gabriel & Dresden, the Subways, Minus the Bear, Be Your Own Pet, Giant Drag, Kristina Sky, The Octopus Project.
Yeah, holy fucking cow.
Also, freak not if you just saw that very last band and did a double-take, as we did much the same. Austin's very-own Octopus Project ("roo!") was selected to perform at this year's festival, after a rather extraordinary series of events that the band was entirely oblivious to. From Peek-A-Boo Records' News Blog:
Apparently there was a contest on MySpace where people could nominate bands, and from these, Coachella would select one winner to play the festival.Over a thousand bands were nominated, and although MySpace user votes played a part in bringing these nominations to the judges' attention, ultimately the winner was selected based on the opinions of the Coachella staff. And that winner was The Octopus Project. The kicker? The Octopus Project didn't even know about the contest until they won.
Not too shabby! Austinist congrats the feisty bunch on their wonderful accomplishment; we'll see you kids at the beer tent.

Last Week Around the -ISTs

X + MO + Pampona + Carl Cox = not many brain cells.
(X is not a variable in this one. ok)
oh. my. god.
Imogen Heap! and Phoenix! Yay!
Daft Punk was also added today.
OP!!!!!!!
I am so excited for them! I freaked out a couple of years ago when they opened for fourtet. Now they're playing coachella! totally awesome.
Glad Octopus Project is getting their due respect elsewhere. I don't think I heard a better album last year than theirs but it didn't get much praise in the local rags.
OP and Tool are some pretty nice bookends! ROO indeed
