3M (Almost) Half Marathon

3M.jpg

Every runner worth his or her Gatorade knows that a marathon is 26.2 miles and a half marathon is, well, half of that, or 13.1 miles, right? Well, guess again. Apparently there was an error in the route used for the 3M Half Marathon held last Sunday that caused it to be one-tenth of a mile short of the true half marathon distance.

To a non-runner, this may seem insignificant, but for all those runners who thought they'd accomplished a PR (personal record) at 3M, it's a pretty big deal and a total bummer. We've run 3M in the past and ran last Sunday as well. In fact, this has always been one of our favorite races since it's really well-supported and the swag bag provides enough free 3M goodies to set up an entire home office; add the bling of a medal for each finisher, breakfast tacos, and free massages after the run and it's hard to beat.

That said - and understanding that nobody's perfect - we still feel compelled to point out that it's difficult to excuse this error since this is the 12th year for this race and the route hasn't changed from last year. At least it wasn't supposed to. We certainly hope they get it right next year, or tell us ahead of time by changing the name ... perhaps to the 3M Almost-Half Marathon?
