Breaking News: Oprah Breaking James Frey Into a Million Little Pieces (to smother in chocolate and eat later)

*Update: The show will air "live" today at 4pm C.S.T. Game on! Did we mention there is a taped piece featuring a stern reprimand from Maureen Dowd. God what we wouldn't give for a stern reprimand from that woman. But we digress.*

We all discussed James Frey's Million Little Lies last week in this space. Some were hurt, some were saddened, some could care less. Some were pissed. But apparently none were as pissed as Oprah. Girl, you do not want to mess with the O. Trust us, we did once, and we'll never work in this town again.

And you can bet, with the forum she has, if you cross her, you are going to hear about it. Apparently Oprah is taking him to task. Right now. As we ~~speak~~ type. Gawker is carrying a constantly-updating post of the goings-on in Oprah's Chicago studio. And she is pissed. And so are the hundreds of betrayed and angry housewives in her studio audience. Our favorite excerpt from the show thus far: Frey says, “I don’t think it is a novel — it’s a memoir.” When he says he wrote the book from memory, the audience actually boos him. “I have been really embarrassed by this,” says Oprah.

Oh, no you didn't!

Hey, James Frey, guess what? You're not getting a brand new car!

i'll save my frey commentary for a later rant. but oprah... i kind of wanted to punch her. actually, i most definately wanted to punch her. the entire fiasco was so self righteous. i don't think it hit the mark at all as far as the relevant issues, it was merely oprah's chance to whine about how embarrassed she was while incessantly harping on frey's root canal. and the guests... richard cohen's bagel addiction, maureen dowd's horribly nasal treatise on the truth? god, painful all around. hopefully she feels all is right in the world once again and she will now shut it. i think a lot of people are getting screwed in this situation, but oprah is not one of them.

It seems to me that Oprah lost her spine to her audience. She was all about standing by Frey until her viewers started flooding her email, phone lines, and mailbox bitching about it.

I find it awesome and hilarious (as a kind-of F-U to the haters) that all this publicity is actually skyrocketing sales of his two books. In fact, I should head to BookPeople right now and pick copies up myself.
