Austinist Artist Profile: Some Girls at Emo's, Tuesday

* This post comes from Austinist guest contributor Chad Beck
Emo’s generally has a healthy dose of heavy bands for those who like abrasive, eardrum-shattering, live music. It isn’t everyday, however, that Emo’s plays host to groups that intend on actually punishing the audience. Some Girls, who take Emo’s indoor stage around Midnight, Tuesday the 24th, are out to do just that. Their latest record, Heaven’s Pregnant Teens (out Tuesday on Epitaph), is about as blistering as music can possibly be. The band’s recent presskit quotes SG guitarist Chuck Rowell, explaining the band's modus operandi:
“Hardcore is just another form of music that has its own musical uniforms and cookie cutter structures. With this record, we wanted to depart from traditional chord changes and time signatures and create something that doesn’t fit into an easily consumable format. We also wanted to punish, and I mean seriously punish people.”
True to Rowell’s word, Heaven’s Pregnant Teens is one of the heavier slabs of rock to come across our radar in quite some time. The fact that Some Girls are comprised of a bevy of hard-hitters (with members of The Locust, The Plot To Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, Unbroken, American Nightmare, Secret Fun Club), this shouldn’t come as a shock. Songs like “Retard and Feathered” and “You’ll Be Happier Wit Lower Standards” are nothing short of aural assaults, crunching the listener with shards of rhythm and stabs of guitars. Topping it off is Wes Eisold’s frantic caged dog vocal assailments, which should scare the hell out of anyone within earshot.
Come on out to Emo’s Tuesday and see if you can withstand the punishment Some Girls promise to deliver. Ear plugs, shock-absorbers and post-show psychiatric help are recommended.
