A Quartet of Weekend Parties

Before venturing out this weekend, head over to FactoryPeople, where they're clearancing their winter apparel through the end of the month. Clothing from Nice Collective, Development, Evisu and dozens of other designers are discounted anywhere from 35-75% off, and try your luck with their $30 bins scattered throughout the store - you never know what you'll find.

Friday, Misprint Magazine is hosting a party to celebrate the release of their latest issue - "the get wasted issue" - at Flamingo Cantina, with sets by The Handsome Charlies, Valhalla, Basic and Bob White & The F-Electrics. The last one they threw turned into an all-night rager, so it's not unreasonable to assume that this will end up much the same. Mis-representative quote from Issue 5, by Kip Hollingsworth:

"I consider myself to be too good to take part in sophomoric frat-like activities ... such as sticking pickles up my ass."

That being said, you can read it for yourself here. Standard caveats regarding Misprint apply.

[mp3] Valhalla - Don't Fuck Him Tonight
[mp3] Handsome Charlies - Perfect
[mp3] Basic - Tyco

Earlier this week, we told you about another issue release party - Box Magazine's sophomore effort - over at The Peacock next to the Pedernales Lofts. Music by Aleem + Michael and, more importantly, a tittilating performance by Skinny Boy Burlesque. But either get there early or be prepared to stand in queue at the bar for a good half-hour; the service hasn't gotten any faster since it opened, but at least the barkeeps are a fun bunch. You can check out issue #2 here, but we should warn you that you may see genitals.

And of course there's always DJ Mel's gratis free.99 fridays over at Tambaleo. After a warm-up set by jah mighty, Mel promises to spin "all the shit you love to hate. hate to love." Which means everything from "hip hop to 80's, 70's am gold to miami bass. electro to 90's running man beats." It's a great idea if you wanna avoid the downtown crowd.

Saturday night, the Austin Electronic Music Association (AEMA) brings "Clarity" to the Velvet Spade - it's an insanely comprehensive evening of DJ sets, laser shows, catered food and fire dancers. Just looking at the lineup makes our heads ache (from their website):

7pm-8pm DJ 4U
A veteran in the Austin electronic scene will start this party out with his selection of solid house grooves and maybe a few surprises.

8pm-9pm 3 BIG MO FOES
Two eclectic producers on laptops being mixed by one crazy ass dude. Daniel Byrd producer for artists such as "The Rockness Monster" and from the duo "Gir n Byrd" on the left and Scott Kinnebrew from "The Disciples of Groove" & BK and Mr. E. Finally the meat of this talent sandwich Rocky Rodd aka DJ Gir mixing up this source force with the intentions to inflict ear damage.

9pm-10pm Cherubic and Whatamelon
The most talented married couple we know. These guys are like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get. From down tempo intelligent layered funk to Chicago House with soul full vocals that you just LOVE! Totally Worth It!

10pm-11pm DJ Poppin J
Poppin' the beats for you on the dance floor. This girl will make your booty shake with her selections of intense house tracks. Currently the president of A.E.M.A., she is in the studio recording her first mix CD with producer Scott Kinnebrew. She has taken the time to come out and escalate this party to a four on the floor stomp fest.

11pm-12pm Tribe
The man behind Natural Konsepts, Tribe, is providing the sound for our inside room. With 10 years in the rave scene and 7 years behind the decks, Justin, aka Tribe, will continue the flow with his deep knowledge of the dance floor. His mix of progressive house and breaks are sure to please the crowd.

12pm-1am RAM-Z
Where ever you go in this town RAM-Z has played there. He is an Austin icon and will never let up. Relentless of his pursuit of the perfect sound he has been tearin shit up with his techno sets and leaving dead bodies everywhere. This man will be taking our show to the next level!

1am-2am STEEL GROOVES
Seamless! This man is the best mixer we have ever seen and by far the best Techno DJ in town. He wiil be dropping original tracks down into his set and you will never know what part of the world the music came from. RJ, aka Steel Grooves, has been DJ'ing in this town for years and we are happy to have him headlining our show. "We're not worthy We're not worthy We're not worthy" . Mad Repect for this man and what he has done for the scene

2am-3am DJ Hallowed
What can we say? This dude does it all. Art Phelps owner of Lost Tribe Lasers and trance DJ extraordinare will taper off the show with his set of hard trance. One of the founders of Chakra 7 Art has been everywhere from the desert shows in Los Angeles to the Capitol of Texas. All I got to say is it will be worth the stay.

"try your luck with their $30 bins scattered throughout the store - you never know what you'll find"

I bet you'll find tshirts worth $5 (or less) that instead of being marked up 10x are now only marked up 6x.

Hopefully you'll find yourself... wondering 'When did I become such a materialistic pariah that I am willing to pay 10x more than I should for a pair of socks at a store that used to sell guns!?'

and what's this reader photoblog you're talking about, any different than austinist flickr tags?
