Oh What a Turkish Delight! This Week's New Movie Releases

Some interesting cinematic offerings for you today, movie lovers. Much better than the dismal choices of last week (we read a review somewhere on the internerd in which the writer compared watching Aeon Flux to receiving an anal probe. Harsh). So cozy up in a theatre this weekend with one or more of this week’s new movie releases.
*The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
Forget the Christian undertones (or don’t forget them, it’s a free country), this movie is going to reign supreme at the box office. Reviewers are saying this adaptation remains fairly true to the book (suck on that, LOTR and Harry Potter!), and most agree that Tilda Swinton is creepy as the White Witch. We’re not sure if producers are planning to follow up with the next six books of the Narnia series. We’re hoping, most likely in vain, that they know to quit while they’re ahead.
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
One of those films you might never hear of if you didn’t pay attention to the marquee at Dobie. From Austin360: “During China's Cultural Revolution, Luo and Dai are sons of parents classified as enemies of the people and are sent to a remote mountain town for 're-education.' Their every movement spied upon, the two friends discover a pair of unexpected distractions — a suitcase full of forbidden foreign books and the beautiful daughter of a local tailor — that irrevocably change their lives and their friendship.” Aww. We can’t make fun of that. Although the word “Balzac” is kind of hilarious.
Ellie Parker
Naomi Watts shines with comedic triumph in this otherwise blah tale about life as a struggling Hollywood actress. Maybe we can pick up some tips from her. Or just, you know, BE her.
*Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic
She’s pretty, she’s filthy, she’s funny. She’s also Jonathan Silverman’s sister someone who bears a striking resemblance to Jonathan Silverman, and it’s true that we had a small crush on him way back when he had a career. Which has nothing to do with Sarah’s stand-up act, we just like admitting embarrassing things on the internet.
*Be Here to Love Me
When we saw the name Townes Van Zandt on the Antone's marquee earlier this week, we were puzzled. Huhwhaaa? How is that possible? We thought cloning was illegal (or at least frowned upon). Turns out they were advertising for this new biography of the beloved late singer-songwriter. Antone’s, you so tricky!
*Syriana
Hollywood's two cents about our unquenchable thirst for oil and its global (and personal) effects. If nothing else, this movie will prove that George Clooney is somewhat of a badass.
*Austinist recommends. We also recommend these first-runs: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Jarhead, Capote, Good Night, and Good Luck, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Shopgirl, The Squid and the Whale
