Just Like the Traditional Media, We Like To FREAK OUT Whenever the First Freeze Comes

Austin commuters may have to contend with icy roads later this evening and tomorrow morning if weather forecasters are right. Word around town is that some businesses are closing early so people can get home before things get too slippery on the roads.

A major winter storm is developing, and Texas is on the hit list. The front should be in Austin by this afternoon, with wind chills in the teens.

"The first strong arctic cold front of the season, arriving about noon, would be the trigger to change the rain to ice. Less than a quarter inch of accumulated ice will be possible on roads, bridges and overpasses by Thursday morning, making driving hazardous, according to the National Weather Service."

The storm is also predicted to bring heavy snow to the East, so if you were planning on traveling by plane tomorrow, it would be a good idea to call the airport for delay status. You can call the Austin-Bergstrom airport at 530-2242, or go online at www.abia.org.

We know this weather is not anything like the folks over at Chicagoist have to deal with, but hey, we'll jump at any chance we get to wear our Old Navy performance fleece.

UPDATE
*The UT campus will close at 2 p.m. today (12/7) and reopen tomorrow (12/8) at 10 a.m.

*We also got a call of snow being reported in Lago Vista. In case you are wondering where that is, click on this map link and click here for a weather forecast.
