Frontera Fest is Coming!

frontera_header.jpg

Tuesday night we went to Hyde Park Theatre and checked out the stage with a handful of Austin's aspiring actors, directors, and producers. We overheard someone remark, "It's a nifty space!" We couldn't agree more, which is why we're here to tell you that in a mere 34 days, Hyde Park Theatre in collaboration with Austin Script Works will be kicking off the theatre fest of Austin. We are, of course, talking about Frontera Fest.

frontera_stage.jpgNow, 34 days may seem like a long way off, but when you take into account the holidays, time off from work, hours lost to all those parties you gotta go to, and days lost to the resulting hangovers, then Frontera Fest is really only...save the 1, carry the 2... well, it's practically tomorrow!

This is Frontera's thirteenth year, and the fest has seen its fair share of amazing talents and wonders treading those squeaky Hyde Park boards. Frontera Fest is where yeeeears ago we saw, for the first time ever, in our whole lives, the unstoppable Lee Eddy. She started off her short fringe piece backstage, singing her own special lyrics to Head Over Heels (something about swimming with eels), and then launched onto to the stage in full-on rant mode. It was incredible. We've been in love with her ever since. But we digress. This is just to say that you never know what you're going to see on the Frontera Fest stage. We've seen things that made us laugh until we cried. We've seen things that made us...just...cry. But we've always had a great time, without fail.

frontera_dressing.jpgThe extremely cool thing about Frontera Fest is the way it serves local talent. You take one empty stage, add an incredible support system of extremely well-organized producers, PR wranglers, lighting & sound designers, tech crew, and more, and stir in the best of Austin's up-and-coming talent, and you've got quite a party on your hands! In short, Frontera Fest provides a playground for Austin's theatre geniuses, large and small.

Why bring this up now? Because we want you to mark your calendars. Thirty-four days isn't a heck of a lot of time, and you don't want to miss the 80 different 25-minute productions that will play over the course of just five weeks, Jan 10 - Feb 11. Not to mention the 11 different 45-90-minute productions that will be hosted at The Blue Theater, Jan 17-29. Watch this space for further updates!
