You may remember last year was a bit sticky for the Horns vis-à-vis getting an invite to the BCS. There were issues surrounding who voted for whom and, of course, the very public politicking by Coach Mack Brown. His pleadings, and probably the fact that the Horns were a better team and a better draw, got the Horns into the Rose Bowl. The funny thing about winning is it changes everything. Now, instead of Mack looking like a politico who says all the right things and is full of fake sincerity but remains a guy who can not win the big one, Mack has become a sincere, genuine, lovable, leader of a family of players who can win the big one. Ah, the fates are fickle. Regardless of how you feel about him, you have to admit he is a pretty sharp guy with a good mind for public relations.
With that said, Mack voted USC #1 in his final coaches poll, and deservedly so. And while we haven’t heard the soundbite explaining his vote, we imagine it went something like this, “You, know, Pete’s a heck of a coach and he’s done a heck of a job out there at USC. They’ve won something like 34 games in a row out there and you just don’t do that kinda thing without having a great gameplan from the coaches and some great kids. They deserve to be the #1 team in the country and we just look forward to the honor of going out to the Rose Bowl, for the second year in a row now, and playing a heck of a team. It should be a great game, and we’re just real proud of our kids, but we know it’s not gonna be easy, cause Pete’ll have his kids ready like he has every Saturday for the past three years.”
