Dublin Dr. Pepper and Queso Fries

dr_pepper.jpg

Only very recently did we go to Austinist landmark and creative foods diner Texicalli Grille on Oltorf (by Curra's). It's an unassuming little place, so much so that we don't think we ever really noticed it before, even though we've eaten at Curra's many times. We went on the recommendation of coworkers and were urged to order a Dr. Pepper which is made with real cane sugar and not high fructose corn syrup. We got Coke instead (we are creatures of habit). Not until our third visit did we get the Dr. Pepper (we're a Pepper, too!) and even got the highly acclaimed (by anybody who's anybody) Dr. Pepper Shake. Yumtastic!

This whole phenomenon of Dublin Dr. Pepper came to our attention only recently when the Daily Texan did a little piece on it. Besides Central Market, Texicalli may be one of the few places in Austin to carry the purist soda. Readers, anywhere else? Dublin, Texas is where this special, orginal recipe Dr. Pepper is made. And it's the only place it is made.

But there is more to Texicalli Grille than just good pop (as we midwesterners say), there is also great food. As vegetarians, we were very excited to see numerous non-meat options on the menu, and not just run of the mill garden burgers either. One favorite is the Ruby Q--a sandwich made of onion, peppers, cheese, and cabbage with a freaking tasty dipping sauce included. How many years has it been since we've had a sandwich with dipping sauce? Many, many, many years. There's more, too. Interesting choices for herbavores and carnivores alike. But one of their greatest offerings has got to be the queso fries.

We know we are like the last people in Austin to discover and bask in the wonder of Texicalli Grille, but we can't help giving it up for this great gem of a place. Hopefully when you go, owner Danny Young will be there to greet you. We can't be positive, but we tend to believe that he's the nicest man on the planet. And so, so Austin.

The queso fries are STOOPID delicious! It's soooooo worth the risk of immediate acute heart failure. So worth it.

Never, NEVER have i thought to try out "that other restaurant next to Curra's"! thanks for the rec, coffey!

Rudy's BBQ also sells bottles of Dublin Dr. Pepper.

Deeeeeeee-lish shakes/malts in gazillions of flavors! Even the salads are good, if a touch pricey...

I'm pretty sure I saw some of the cane sugar Dr. Pepper at the Whip-In down on I-35 last time I was there.

Dublin is my hometown, so I feel safe saying that Dublin Dr. Pepper, while delicious, does not balance the heart-wrenching desolation and gross bigotry the town exhibits. Moral of the story? If you're going to drink Dublin Dr. Pepper, for God's sake, DO IT IN AUSTIN!! Dublin is like poop in the soup for the country soul.

So we went there tonight, and holy cow are those yam fries amazing.

I live not too far from Texicalli and dig their food, but their crazy hours and the fact that I work way north mean that I hardly ever get to eat there.

They're only open until 4pm on most days and they're closed on Sunday.

I'm a waiter at Texicalli and it's really great to hear you guys saying such nice things about the place and the food we serve. In reply to ttrentham's post though, I just wanted to let everyone know that our hours have changed and our better now. We're now open from 11am-9pm Monday-Saturday. Anyway, glad all of you enjoy our food. I'll see you there.

Eric
