Art from the Streets - Annual Show

artfromstreet.jpg

We got the following press release from Art from the Streets. We recently purchased a piece from one of their artists, James Curran, whose work can be seen on the website, and who will definitely have new works at this show. We had the chance to meet Curran when we bought the work. He is quite a charming man, & he will likely be on hand this weekend, along with many of the other artists.

So hey, for $3 we're definitely planning to stop by the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless, 7th & Neches, to take a gander at the artwork. This Sat/Sun, noon-5. Press releasy stuff follows.

This weekend, November 5th - 6th is the 13th annual Art From The Streets show and sale of art created by homeless persons! Please come and see the art! Support your friendly artists!

The show is held from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless. Admission is a measly $3.

Just in case you have never been, this show provides an opportunity for homeless persons to display and sell art work they have created over the last year. Nearly all the proceeds from sales go directly to the artist - we take only a small amount to help cover the costs of mounting the art. The art starts at $30 and goes up from there.

Many, many of our artists depend on this show to provide them with adequate income for housing, transportation, medical care, necessary supplies. We cannot tell you how nervous they are this year after a somewhat disappointing turnout last year. We have a couple of folks on the verge of losing their housing, and they are most anxious to make some money!

And you will not be able to resist buying the art. First, it is just so cool and inspiring to see the artists all dressed up, excited and proud of their work. It is a wonderful opportunity to sit and chat with these creative people in a more positive context from how we usually interact! Second, their art is wonderful. It spans everything from pencil drawings, to photography, to glass etching, to water color, oil, magic marker...you name it, they have experimented with it. We have seen some of the art and it is super! Come early for the best choice!

So, see you there this weekend. Spend money. Have fun. Buy art.

It's easy!

  • Thanks for the heads-up! We went yesterday and were astounded by just how much art there was. I bought one painting and a mixed-media piece. Will definitely be checking it out again!
