Vote Now, Vote Often, Vote No!

PinkDome, Burnt Orange Report and In the Pink Texas just reminded us that early voting started today. Familiarize yourself on the issues at hand with the nonpartisan League of Women Voters Voter's Guide, and check out the Secretary of State's list of proposed constitutional amendments.

At hand is, of course, Prop 2, which seeks to limit the definition of marriage as exclusively between a man and woman. We realize we're preaching to the choir here, but we're nevertheless posting snippets from some excellent editorials, as well as sites where you can find more information. Or, you might opt to ally with the Ku Klux Klan and participate in their rally in Austin next Saturday. Seriously? In Austin?

From No Nonsense in November's site:

Why is the Marriage Constitutional Amendment Nonsense?

NONSENSE: Instead Of Real Solutions For Texas
The Texas Legislature failed Texans and did not solve real problems, such as school finance, property tax reform and health insurance for all Texas children. Instead, they focused on Nonsense like sexy cheerleading and this amendment that is discriminatory, hateful and divisive.

NONSENSE: Amending The Bill Of Rights In The Texas Constitution
The proposed Constitutional Amendment would use the Texas Bill of Rights to deny rights to some Texans. The Bill of Rights is a sacred document that for more than one hundred years was used to afford rights to all Texans. It is Nonsense to change it to deny rights to some Texans.

NONSENSE: It Is Already The Law
Civil marriages between same-sex couples are already prohibited in Texas, and civil marriages and civil unions from other states or other countries are not recognized in Texas.

NONSENSE: The Language Is Overly Broad
Even if you oppose civil marriage for same-sex couples, the Constitutional Amendment also prohibits civil unions and domestic partnerships and may impact common law marriages.

NONSENSE: Hurts Texas Families
By depriving same-sex couples access to civil marriages, civil unions and domestic partnerships, some Texas families lose the right to protect their loved ones in many of the important areas of life: medical decisions, inheritance, property, parental rights and more. Protecting your family is a fundamental right. The Constitutional Amendment is wrong.

From the Statesman:

A ban on gay marriage would do nothing — nothing at all — to protect or enhance traditional marriage. We urge Texans to vote against Proposition 2, the proposed amendment, because its true purpose is to discriminate against gay Texans.

The proof that this is really aimed at gays, not protecting traditional marriage, is that the proposed amendment would also ban the state from recognizing "any legal status identical or similar to marriage....

But Proposition 2 would anchor in the constitution a belief that same-sex couples — citizens who work, pay taxes and are subject to the law like everyone else — are not entitled to official recognition of their intimate, committed relationships to each other. And it would make it as difficult as possible to ever obtain such recognition from the Legislature, even if a majority came to support it.

It remains a terrific irony that, even as gay Texas citizens who want to marry cannot, "straight" Texans who can marry file some 120,000 divorce actions a year. And yet voters are told that the way to "protect" marriage is to pass a constitutional amendment shutting out gay Texans.

I'm a little lazy, so maybe you can provide a link to information on how to register to vote? Is it too late to register for Travis county or would you have to already have registered for the last presidential election?

I didn't pay too much attention in government class, I'm guessing a lot of austinist readers didn't.

Too late to register AND vote in the November polls. Oct 11th 2005 was the deadline (takes 30 days to become effective).

But everyone should go ahead AND GET registered while it's on your mind (even if you miss this specific vote). That way, you'll be good to go for the next round.
