Stay - or Don't: This Week's New Movie Releases!

moviebanner.jpg

We apologize for totally dropping the ball and not posting last week’s new movie releases. We were far too hungover to type. It happens. We know you’re okay on your own as far as figuring out which movies are in theatres today, but we like to pretend we have a purpose here. So maybe last weekend you went to see Everything is Illuminated, or Elizabethtown, or, bless your heart, Domino. Whatever you saw, post about it in the comments and let fellow readers know what they should or should not be seeing in the cinemas. And now, on to this week’s new releases!

Dreamer
Creepy (but, we grudgingly admit, talented) Dakota Fanning, Kurt Russell, and a horse share the screen in this little ditty about never giving up on injured yet determined racehorses. Or something like that. It will probably be sticky with feel-goodness, but it’s a safe bet if you’ve got young ‘uns.

*North Country
Charlize Theron angles for the Oscar again, this time sporting one wicked femullet.

Doom
Why, God, Why? Why? Why why whywhywhywhywhywhy? If you’re a 13-year-old boy, you’re going to love this. Everyone else should just start drinking now.

*Stay
This movie looks crazy cool, and it’s getting good reviews. Plus, Ryan Gosling and Ewan McGregor: Yum.

Kids in America
Dear Nicole Richie: Without Paris, you are nothing. Sincerely, Planet Earth

Secuestro Express
This flick flew under our radar (as in, we hadn’t even heard of it until today), but supposedly it’s a gritty look into a type of kidnapping that’s thriving in South America. The “Secuestro Express” is perpetrated by organized thugs who randomly abduct upper-class citizens in order to quickly extort “reasonable” sums of money from their families so that authorities are unlikely to be involved. Mia Maestro stars (she was on Alias! Until she turned into a zombie and got shot by her father. Yeah, that show has really gone downhill).

*Good Night, and Good Luck
The Best-Looking Man on the Planet, aka George Clooney, directs this film about legendary broadcaster Edward R. Murrow's public skepticism of Joe McCarthy’s investigations into Communism within the United States government. A lot of talk and not much action, but it’s rumored to be absolutely captivating (George’s good hair and dimples notwithstanding).

And don't forget, the Austin Film Festival is going on this weekend!

*Austinist Recommends. We also recommend these first runs: Proof, Green Street Hooligans, The Corpse Bride, Serenity, March of the Penguins
