Tonight: The Sadies @ Saxon Pub

thesadies.jpg

Last year, Toronto's The Sadies released their fifth full-length album, Favourite Colours, to widespread acclaim. Blending together everything from surf rock to 60's psychedelia to honky tonk country, the foursome created such an eclectic musical tapestry that Paste hailed them as "masters of American musical idioms." Robyn Hitchcock, Greg Keelor and Joey Burns all contributed to this album, only adding to the considerable list of talented musicians that have shared the stage or studio with the boys, including Andre Williams, Jon Langford, and, recently, Neko Case.

Enroute to the West Coast, where they'll be hooking up with Jon Spencer of Blues Explosion and Matt Verta-Ray of Speedball Baby, The Sadies are gracing the stage in select cities. Tonight, they'll be playing a special midnight show at Saxon Pub. Check 'em out.

I was there, too. I saw them open for Neko last year, but this was more of a real show. It was great to see another type of band other than the typical bluesy/alt-country stuff at the Saxon. The sound was incredible. I know who you're talking about. That one drunk lady was missing social skills. I tried avoiding her gaze as I knew she was a little too friendly. The highlight for me was their version of "Lazy Nights" by Gram Parsons. Heck, if I had been standing, I might have danced myself.

  • What a fantastic show -- would have been better without the antics of the exceptionally drunk people in the crowd, though.

Thanks for the heads-up on this event, I might have missed it otherwise. I ran right over to the Saxon after the first half of the Queens of the Stone Age's epic two-hour set. It was a good night for very tall men with mad guitar skills.
