"It's the Wrong Trousers, Gromit!" New Movie Releases

moviebanner.jpg

It’s funny when quite possibly one of the best movies released on a given day stars characters that are made entirely of clay. But if you’re not “into” that sort of thing, don’t worry. At least a couple of today’s new releases might be worth your hard-earned cash.

*Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Director Nick Park’s first feature film was the cute and clever Chicken Run, but we love him more for his brilliant Wallace & Gromit short films. The claymation is tops, the characters are charming, and so we’re hoping that Wallace & Gromit’s big screen debut lives up to at least modest expectations. What surprises us the most is that Helena Bonham-Carter and Ralph Fiennes provide some of the voices.

*Green Street Hooligans
This film made its world premiere at this year’s SXSW (back then it was titled “Hooligans”) and won both the Jury and Audience Awards for Best Narrative Feature. It spent the next few months waiting for distribution in the States, and now it’s finally here. We’ve heard good things. Expect gritty, expect violent, expect Elijah Wood trying to prove that he ain’t just a hobbit, bitch.

*Proof
Movies based on plays are usually never as good as the play, but this one might get close enough. Gwyneth – she’s so troubled! Sir Anthony – he’s so crazy! Jake – he’s so…ridiculously attractive!

In Her Shoes
We admit that we’ve been sucked into this pandering chick flick (it has sisters, grandmas, AND designer shoes!), but we’re afraid it won’t be as good as we hope. We would see this just for Toni Collette.

Thumbsucker
A movie about a 17-year-old boy who still sucks his thumb. Keanu Reeves is in it. Yeah, we’re not sure either.

Two for the Money
Despite several gratuitous shots of Matthew McConaughey’s chiseled upper torso, this movie is probably gonna suck. Hard.

Waiting
Oh Ryan Reynolds, we fear even you cannot save what looks like a worthless piece of poop.

*Austinist recommends. We also recommend these first runs: Serenity, 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Aristocrats, Broken Flowers, March of the Penguins

    Thumbsucker is really good.

Elliott Smith covered two of my favorite songs ever for the soundtrack before he died and even the Polyphonic Spree is sort of okay in the context of the movie.

Plus, Tilda Swinton and Vincent D'Onfrio as the parents = totally checkmate. And drunken debate club antics! And a deer! And pot! And ritalin! And how!

What's up with Jake Gyllenhaal? The guy has a starring role in major movie coming out in October, November AND December this year. Between Proof this month, Jarhead next month, and Brokeback Mountain in December, this guy's going to be eating up a pretty large percentage of my movie budget between now and New Year's.

  • "In Her Shoes" is wonderful, and I recommend it. I caught it at a sneak preview two weeks ago. I went with a small group and we all loved it. Since Curtis Hanson directed it, I wouldn't classify it as a chick flick.
