    Kayhne please stop, seriously.

    Ron Mexico hates black people

  • Wheeee! Inane commenting is fun. Wheee.

Oh. By the way. 6000 Africans died from AIDS today.

You all seem like smart enough people; go pick a better battle than whether or not unpaid, volunteer austinist writers are hipster, elitists that embrace censorship and hate free speech (especially grammatical, free speech).

Why did I just waste 45 seconds writing this response?

    Yeesh.

  • ron mexico

I don't see much point in that, sadly. Plus, it would be a lot more exciting to hash things out here, where you and your cohorts can simply delete comments you don't like.

  • Miggo

    God Bless Nick-Names!

    Hi all --

I've only been minimally following this, but here's what I gather:

Things were said in the comments by us (as in, the Austinist staff) that were later detracted - perhaps because the person who said them felt they were hurtful, wrong, or downright irrelevant. As for removing anyone else's comments: I personally hate to believe that this was done deliberately. And from what remains in this (painfully long) comments section, accusations of revisionism strikes me as overwrought. Edward, as best as I can gather and hope: it ain't so.

And Ron? I'm sad that you find us "fucking stupid", "cooler than thou", "self absorbed" writers of "hipster pap" (i do like that last phrase, though). So email me. Let's talk.

  • Austinist is a web site, so can't actually comment on itself, but I'll say this: this is a web site. If you don't like one of the posts, move on to the next. We are trying to serve a broad audience, and are doing our best. Everyone should feel free to send in their feedback, ideas for stories, or applications to write for us. We just brought on a big handful of contributors recently, each one with their own voice and attitude towards Austin and what goes on here. We're not an exclusionary bunch, and we're not elitist weirdos. We're just people who enjoy Austin and want to share with you.

  • edward

    Ben, say it aint so!

  • SplendaRob

There is revisionisim going on. Care to comment Austinist?

  • R.O.

interesting. my comment from this morning about how i was starting to like austinist less and less disappeared too. hmm

  • edward

boss: There's no point in responding to your comment because it will just be erased if it can't be defended.

  • boss

integrit? edward, get back to work.

  • edward

That's totally fucked up and SERIOUSLY calls into question the integrity of the Austinist!
Let the record speak for itself! Is this really the way the Austinist responds to criticism?! By deleting what was criticized as if it never existed???

Is there anything else you want to pretend never happened?!!

  • austinist minister of informat

we refused to allow mr. hammer to delve into the inane and base behavior of certain commenters

  • edward

What the hell happened to Mr. Hammer's original "dimwitted idiot" comment that was part of this thread and *I quoted*?! I don't see it anymore!

I hope this is some sort of honest mistake and not revisionism by the Austinist Ministry of Truth. Seriously, WTF?!!

  • ron mexico

Truecraig: it's not a problem to me at all. It's merely symptomatic of the Austinist POV -- either way he's trying to express superiority over someone (see above comments about cooler-than-thou attitude). So he's trying to satirize the elitism of one group of people by swapping it for the elitism of another group.

    Bra-vo.

  • edward

It’s ironic that after attempting to satirize pretentious self absorbed tools, you come off as one yourself by responding to criticism with personal attacks like:

“well at least you're getting somewhat closer to the truth, though not quite there, you dimwitted idiot.”

We don't hold it's against you though. It must be hard when the masses don’t understand your satirical wit because you are so deep and complex.

  • Jaco

Mark, we're at the Brown Bar. Where are you??

Oh my god I just saw someone walk by wearing velcro!!! Martini time!

  • Mr. Mexico, I need just a shred of clarification. If he's kidding: it fits; if he's not: it fits even better; either way: that's a problem to you.

    Do I have that right?

  • ron mexico

See, Mark, the problem is that if you're not kidding (and you probably aren't), the whole thing fits in Austinist just as well as if you are. Actually, even better.

  • lance n cheryl 4 ever

LANCE 4 PRESIDENT! WE love LANCE! I love Lance! Yay!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/04/health/nutrition/04bike.html

    oooh noooo!!!

  • mark hammer

this has everything to do with austin, guys. lance armstrong should be our mayor, or maybe even our diety. and just because you don't have a volvo wagon and WE do doesn't mean you should get all upset and stuff. oh, crap, i am due for happy hour at the brown bar. ciao tutti.

  • Mez

I enjoy the informal daily source of Austin news the Austinist provides, and I would even enjoy some of the "what I did today/last night" hipster posts if the authors posted in first person and dropped the annoying "we" crap.

  • SplendaRob

I think R.O. does a good job explaining my feelings, too. I do like variety, but I feel the "this is what I did today/tonight" posts are better suited for personal space. I prefer the Austinist posts where I'm being informed about something. Everybody has their own flavor, though.

  • R.O.

i like austinist. i think it fills a few gaps in austin. to be critical, i've never really enjoyed the original articles (including this one) i think this one is a little too self-congratulatory. but whatever. i'm glad they're opening up to more writers and voices.

  • mb

    lol! nice one.

  • mark hammer

i think it is "are you being sarcastic?"

    god bless homerpalooza

  • kid #1: "That guy's really cool."

kid #2: "Are you being ironic, man?"

kid #1: [sighs] "I just don't know any more."

  • ron mexico

    Satire. Right. Okay.

If that's the case, it seems to be satirizing Austinist, its cooler-than-thou attitude and generally self-absorbed posts. So I guess that makes it kinda funny.

But it's really not very effective satire because it reads pretty much like all the other hipster pap available here.

  • THIS post is what is missing from the family of [city]ISTs. Love it, hate it, consider it for the spice that it is. I hope Hammer (is that Czech-German, or straight Viking there, Ham?) has more of these at the ready.

I wish that whole "royal we" thing was only installed at Austinist. ALL the ISTs are gun-barreled into it, so it's more conspiratorial than WE will let on.

  • Jooley_Ann

Brilliant. Truly brilliant. Not sure why y'all don't get it. Maybe because it is satire (not parody), something of a lost art in these here times.

  • Jo

Weird that you people didn't like this -- it's the only funny thing I've ever read on Austinist. For once, the fucking ridiculous snarky "Royal We" POV that Austinist so awkwardly tries to maintain actually makes sense.

  • Jaco

I cannot believe you know Janet!#@!!@!!@@@!!!

She is the sweetest lady. We're planning murder mystery party next weekend after we pretend to be interested on a Texas wine tour and you absolutely have to attend. Janet is so much fun when she is tipsy, but I'm still not sure her husband really understands the "open relationship"

    concept.

    Got to go....

    P.S. Isn't Trevor's back hair funny?!@@#@@!

  • This is too subtle for me if it is a parody. The caricature of the Austin athelete/aesthete archetype is funny, sure. I just didn't pick up on any sly winks like I expect from a parody. Unlike wittier folk, I have to be beaten over the head with a joke like this.

Another other odd thing is that bit in the middle that's all first-person singular rather than plural.

If this is not a parody then well, it's hi-larious.

  • SplendaRob

    Is this a real post?

  • odam

i got your back, ron mexico.

  • herpes carrier

I agree, Ron. By the way, what is that stuff on your lip? And will you please pass along your website so we can read about your trevails, you ol witty so-and-so.

  • ron mexico

this is fucking stupid, even for austinist

  • lance n cheryl 4 ever

ah oui oui... vive le lance! that. was. tres magnifique! LOL
