Serenity Now! New Movie Releases

The summer movie season is over, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any good flicks to look forward to. In fact, we’ve found that they often save the best ones for last. You know, just in time for Mr. Oscar (well, in some cases. Sorry, Jessica Alba). We’re pretty excited about a couple of the films being released today, which we’re sure will be apparent in our completely biased summaries of them.
*Serenity
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. We didn’t watch Firefly, the TV series created by Joss Whedon (of television's Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame), until very recently (when we bought the whole season – 15 episodes of awesomeness, baby). Ohhh, we have so much love for it now. The show was cancelled prematurely, but crazed fans clamored for more, and Whedon heard their call. The movie should pick up where the series left off, while still engaging people who have never seen an episode and have no idea yet just how hot Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) really is. We shall see if Mr. Whedon succeeds.
The Greatest Game Ever Played
Shia LaBeouf’s buttony cuteness aside, we’re not sure if the world needs another movie about golf. But it’s Disney and it’s PG, so the kids might like it, and maybe they’ll learn something about perseverance…or friendship…or believing in yourself…or whatever.
*A History of Violence
We saw Viggo Mortenson on The Daily Show recently, and he alluded to the fact that director David Cronenburg is one messed up dude. Which could mean this movie is really good, or just really weird. And messed up. It's probably all three.
Oliver Twist
Seriously, how many times can people remake this movie? It’s Dickens. Just leave it alone.
Into the Blue
Something about finding treasure on the ocean floor and then things go horribly wrong, yadda yadda. Let’s not beat around the bush here. Jessica Alba is in a bikini, Paul Walker is shirtless a lot. Now, go waste $8.50.
MirrorMask
Pilfered straight from imdb.com: “MirrorMask centers on Helena, a 15 year old girl in a family of circus entertainers, who often wishes she could run off and join real life. After a fight with her parents about her future plans, her mother falls quite ill and Helena is convinced that it is all her fault. On the eve of her mother's major surgery, she dreams that she is in a strange world with two opposing queens, bizarre creatures, and masked inhabitants. All is not well in this new world - the white queen has fallen ill and can only be restored by the MirrorMask, and it's up to Helena to find it. But as her adventures continue, she begins to wonder whether she's in a dream, or something far more sinister.” Sounds like our autobiography.
*Austinist recommends. We also recommend these first-runs: The Baxter, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, 2046, Constant Gardner, March of the Penguins, The Aristocrats, Broken Flowers
