They Don't Do Voodoo, But Do You, Dude?

We told you early this morning that rumors were spreading that the Voodoo Music Experience was going to make its home in our city while New Orleans underwent its rebuilding phase.

Well, we've got an update. A little (actually big) birdie told us that Charles Attal, the man behind ACL has categorically denied that this festival will take place in Austin.

Charles Attall is a monopoly and bad for our music scene. Pig!

eh, sure...there are things about CAP i dont like, but he's done some good things for this city and its music scene.

"Big bird" books ACL festival and Stubb's...not Zilker park...that's done by the City. Big Bird might not want to divert attention away from his own festival since he is "the man behind ACL".

While Attal isn't our "big bird," that's a damn fine point you make.

Lame.

I dont see why Attal would be worried about the Voodoo Music Fest competing with ACL, since most of the ACL acts are either big middle-of-the-road alternarock or a sort of KGSR fare that simultanously appeals to frats and John Aielli. As much as I like John Aielli, I would much rather see the Voodoo Music Fest than ACL.

Hopefully someone will step over Attal to make that happen, its pretty lame that he would go against having Voodoo here after Katrina anyway. Is ACL mindshare that important? Hopefully the bird is wrong.

i think everyone is missing the point. to the best of our knowledge, voodoo fest will not be happening in austin. there could be a million reasons why we it's not happening. we are not in any way saying that CAP doesn't want to have voodoo fest here...for all we know, they would love to host it, but can't for some reason. the point of this post was just to let people know not to get their hopes up...not to start a debate over what CAP has or has not done for this city (which is quite a lot as far as i'm concerned...most of the tickets i purchase for live music have charles' name on them and i'm behind anyone who can get my favorite bands to stop by austin on tour). it would be awesome if voodoo fest could relocate to austin, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen...for whatever reason.

According to some people at the Texas Music Office, Voodoo Fest actually will be in Austin, as of a couple hours ago.

hmmmm. I have no idea who that "bird" is, but I hope he/she is correct.

the point is, actually, voodoo fest will or won't happen regardless of what charles attal says. it has nothing to do with him.

Evidently, it will be in Memphis. Announced this morning in the Commercial Appeal. But, that may be just another rash, premature announcement. Nice to see a couple of great music cities pitch in to help out a fellow music city.

It's official. Voodoo Fest goes to Memphis.

Memphis? Why on earth would you choose Memphis?

ummm ever been to memphis? they have a lot of music there.

Yeah, ever heard a little BB King, Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Elvis? Or, more modern, North Mississippi All Stars, Big Ass Truck, Free Sol, Lucero, Saliva, Three 6 Mafia, 8-Ball and MG? The music scene in Memphis is legendary, and it's been revived as of late, with a vengeance.

yep. been to memphis. have family there. been to graceland. love the jungle room. been to the rev. al green's church. just the feeling when you go inside is almost enough to make you believe in god. i question memphis because i am not aware of a venue or area that would be as conducive to putting on a festival like VooDoo as Zilker would be, not because i am unaware of their music scene or music history. duh. but since you folks seem to know soooooo much about frickin' memphis, maybe you could enlighten me with your vast memphis venue/park/fairground knowledge instead of just being jackasses.

Probably it will be on Tom Lee Park, site of the Memphis in May Beale Street Music festival. Down side of that is there wouldn't be adjacent campgrounds.

An alternative site (not as good ambience-wise) would be Shelby Farms.

I am pretty sure it will be Tom Lee Park. You can't beat the sun setting off the Mississippi on one side, and the downtown skyline on the other.
