Ode to the Schnecken

rolls.JPG

It is doughy and swirly and frosty and raisiny and nutty and sometimes it is our very best friend. It is the schnecken, a fancier version of the cinnamon roll, if you will. In Austin you can get the best schnecken at Russell's Bakery on Hancock (at the corner of Balcones). Russell's also makes delicious cake and man oh man do we like our cake.

Wikipedia defines the schnecken as "a pastry composed of rolled dough, which has sugar and nuts spread on top, is cut into slices, and is baked in a muffin tin with butter, honey, or sugar in the bottom." We guess Russell decided to add the raisins to make it extra yummy.

We might be chubby, but baked goods just feel like an essential part of life. Right? Right.

your face is frosty and nutty, alison coffey.

  • I haven't tried the schneken at Russell's, but their cinnamon rolls are much better than Upper Crust. I love their chai tea and their blueberry scones, and their lunch menu is also delicious.

So you haven't tasted the schnecken at Sweetich Hill.
