NOLA Jazz in Austin

We just heard about this show, which sounds like a great way to hear some serious jazz and support our neighbors from New Orleans at the same time.  Fredrick Sanders and his wife and three children were forced to leave the New Orleans area in the wake of Katrina and are now living with family members in Dallas.  Fred already has a loyal following in Austin, where he used to live and play before he moved to the New Orleans area, where he made his living as a jazz pianist/composer for many years. Fred has been lauded for his work with the Fred Sanders Group, Hot Buttered Rhythm, Elias Haslanger Quartet, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra (Wynton Marsalis), the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and many others.

Let’s welcome Fred back to Austin as he explores his options for continuing to work as a musician to support his family.  The word we got is that he will be playing a show this Thursday night from 7 - 9 ish at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, 1106 E 11th (just outside the Victory Grill).  We also heard that a group of Fred’s extremely talented local musician friends will be joining him, including Eli Haslanger and Brannen Temple, and that it promises to be great show.  Please come out to support Fred and his family as you enjoy an evening of real New Orleans jazz right here in Austin.  The cover is $10 and donations to Fred and his family will be gratefully accepted as well.

this is a very laid back environment and it should be a great place to see good jazz...sitting out in the grass on lawn chairs sipping beer on the east side. hopefully this influx of nola artists will continue the expansiojn of the east side music scene and bring it more attention. thanks, ami. burly

Are the majority of these musicians "not white"? I sure hope so. We have way too many white musicians in this town. I would love to go up to Detroit and get a bunch of black thugs to move down here and push out the white hippie folk singers. We already have enough of that crap. Austin needs some variety.

hey pof, go to cedar street on tuesday nights for nola musicians jam sessions, i doubt you wil find many white musicians for that one.
