Biting Into Chuy's Green Chili Menu

One word: HOT! And a demand: bring us a refill of our coke please! Hurry!

We like spicy food. This is spicy food that takes a while to eat. It's a chore really, but a very satisfying one. To quote John Mellencamp (which we like to do whenever possible) it "hurts so good." So we went to Chuy's and did as we promised we would--we made a meal from the limited time only green chile menu, part of the green chile festival that runs through September 25th. We ordered the Green Chile Veggie Burrito made from a large flour tortilla filled with mushrooms, black beans, and, of course, fresh green chiles. Spooned over it is a delicious Green Chile Ranchero Sauce and served on the side is yummy Green Chile Rice. We loved the whole spicy, filling meal.

We also loved sampling from the dish our dinner companion ordered, particularly the breaded and fried chiles, which were served with verde salsa and the most yummiest creamy jalapeno dipping sauce. They call them Texas Toothpicks. He had ordered the Green Chile Compuesto Platter ($10.59) which besides the toothpicks consisted of one Delicias Taco (marinated pork served in green chile tortillas), one Abuela's Tamale ("homemade masa stuffed with roasted pork, corn, and fresh green chiles") , one mini Green Chili Veggie Burrito, and two Green Chile Chicken Taquitos. Our dinner companion gave the meal all gold stars, and was especially enchanted with the taco.

Go sample the green chile menu while it lasts, or you'll have to wait a whole year for the next time. Also, if you eat at Chuy's on Wednesday, September 14th, you'll be helping out local dog rescue groups. Chuy's is giving 10% of their sales that day to the cause.

It was nice to have a taste of "Home" (Also coming from New Mexico) It's the closest thing I get to "New Mexican" food! Now if only i can find it freash roasted here in Texas!!

  • The Dairy Queen (Tastee Freez? I forget) in Hatch has green chile ice cream. There is noooothing in that town besides green chile. And a gas station where I almost had to abandon a 77 vw bus.

Both the salmon and pork tacos are great--I recommend ordering both and sharing.

The Green Chile apple pie is also quite yummy. Just a mild hint of spice added to the the apple flavor. The crust is so-so, but the ice cream makes up for it. So, save room for dessert.

  • chuy's green chile festival always makes me a bit homesick for northern NM food...
